BevBlog: Pepsi gets it right with Diet Pepsi Max

Drops, drips, and leaks from the beverage industry.

I had a chance to try Diet Pepsi Max, Pepsi’s latest entry into the cola category.  While the name “Max” isn’t necessarily synonymous with energy, it seems like they hit the nail on the head with this entry.

dietpepsimax.jpgMade with an aspartame and ace-k sweetener blend, the product drinks reasonably well.  Decent level of sweetness and an aftertaste that I can deal with.  Basically, this is as good as Diet Pepsi gets in the taste department.

More important and newsworthy is that it has 46mg of caffeine per 8 ounces.  This means that the product has 115 mg of caffeine per bottle — more than your typical 8 oz energy drink.  Plus, they’ve done a reasonable job of branding it, with minimal text on the label.   The biggest risk is that people won’t get it.  After all, “invigorating cola” might be interpreted as something a la Diet Coke Plus.  “Energizing cola” might have been a better way to go.

What really amazes me is that it took this long for Pepsi (and we’re still waiting, Coke) to recognize that they can take advantage of their flagship product (cola) in the energy category.  Instead of making things up like Diet Pepsi Jazz and fancy press kits that play music (true story…), all they had to do was add caffeine….a simple thing that they’ve been using forever.

We’ll see how this stuff does…If it fails, it’s certainly going to be because of branding and marketing….Otherwise the category is ripe for a product like this.

I tried the max soda this weekend and honestly wasn’t aware that it was an energy drink. I thought it was Pepsi’s answer to Coke Zero. So I guess I was suprised that it still had a diet taste to it. Overall, I think I would drink more based on the taste and caffeine load. Any word on Pepsi’s answer to Zero?

This probably will be the closest thing to a “Pepsi Zero”. It contains Ace-K, and is less diety and more Pepsi-like than regular Diet Pepsi, though I agree that it doesn’t taste as good as Coke Zero. It’s kinda like Diet Coke Plus in that it’s sort of a “back door” way of launching a sweetener-enhanced version of the existing product. I think they should’ve also launched a non-diet version, but that’s just me.

Pepsi’s answer to Coke Zero has been Pepsi One for some time. I mean.. it’s a diet pepsi with more of a pepsi taste (much like coke zero tastes more like coke). Sure, it has one calorie but is anyone really worried about that??

Oh, and Diet versions of cola are probably at an all-time high in sales. The more america continues to make their citizens feel as fat as they are, the more and more diet products will sell.

As a hardcore Diet Pepsi addict, I was forced into trying Diet Pepsi Max for the first time about a week ago, when my local Kroger was all out of regular Diet Pepsi (thanks to a big sale). I was worried about it, so I only bought one two-liter, but I was pleasantly surprised. It tasted virtually the same — in fact, I wasn’t sure that it was different at all. I had never seen Diet Pepsi Max before, and there were no regular Diet Pepsi two-liters in the store, so I thought they had perhaps merely added “Max” to the name. Now I do recognize that it is a bit sweeter, maybe, but the taste difference is minor.

As for the branding: Yes, I ASSUMED it was a cola energy drink, but I wasn’t 100% sure. In fact, I didn’t know for sure until I Googled the product name, which is how I ended up here. Great blog, by the way.

The soda was good but I didn’t know it was so full of caffeine with my heart condition boy did I have serious palpitations that made me come to the computer and look up more details. Shouldn;t it be on the can more caffeine? I just thought it should. Thanks, Rain

I’m not a diet soda fan at all, however my girlfriend is and she told me I had to try it and Diet Pepsi Max is great! I was hooked the first time I tried it. It doesn’t have that after taste like most diet sodas and the boost of energy it gives me is much appreciated. I hope they keep this one on the shelves.

Pepsi Max blows Coke Zero out of the water. I was a huge fan of Coke Zero until I tried Pepsi Max. It has no after taste. I hope it does not fail because I don’t know if I could handle not having my Pepsi Max in the morning. Who needs coffee?

Interesting ideas… I wonder how the Hollywood media would portray this?

OMG, I have drunk just a little bit of my 20 oz. bottle over 2 days (still a lot left) and I feel completely wired! Not a good feeling at all. Way too jittery. The only reason I slept OK last night was because I take something for sleep anyway. At first I thought it was the gensing that was doing this, and then I googled it and found out how much caffeine it had. This can’t be good!
