That thread with Sodafinder's Discontinued Soda got me thinking... How many of you have spotted discontinued soda at your local supermarket that nobody is purchasing?

I'll start with my sightings...

Mountain Dew Pitch Black - 12 Pack Cans
Vanilla Coke - 12 Pack Cans / 2Litre
Crush Sour Apple - 2Litre
Sprite Berry Clear Remix - 12 Pack Cans
Sprite Aruba Jam Remix - 12 Pack Cans

Being in the US I never got to try Crush Sour Apple, how was it? You should buy up the stock and resell it on ebay.

I picked up some Sour Apple Crush last summer in the 16-20 ounce bottles (I forget the exact size). I loved it. But, they went flat before the freshness date (Oct.)!

Life Brand "Lady Apple Soda" (Shoppers Drug Mart) for one, has a clean crisp taste. Crush Sour Apple seems more like a kids drink.

As far as me buying the remaining few I saw at a chinese market, i'll pass, as Galaga said the carbonation doesn't last long for the 2L, If Crush had 12 pack Sour Apple, it would be a different story though.

I have rambled about this before.....Where can I find an all apple juice drink that is carbonated. I am craving a seltzerized (made up word LOL) apple juice. I would pay good money for a 750ml bottle.

I recall drinking some at a wine tasting tour when I was a kid. The old farts had their wine and I was buzzing off the carbonated apple juice and grape juice. LOL

Mr Zabe, in England we have a drink made under licence by Coca-Cola called Appletiser. You can check out their website at www.appletiser.net (http://www.appletiser.net)

I think this is what you are looking for, it is 100% pure carbonated apple juice with no added sugar or preservatives.

If you can't get this in the states i could trade you for some US Coke products.

Wal-Mart is testing a Manzana soda in their stores in the southwest.

The best apple soda I ever tasted was "C'Plus Apple" which was discontinued decades ago, their Pear soda was not bad either. Both tasting like real carbonated fruit juice.

I hope the Dole Sparklers sell really well, so Pepsi can make new Flavors like; Apple, Strawberry/Banana, Pineapple etc

I imagine the taste of Crush sour apple like the taste of Manzana Lift green apple... it's really sour...

Zabe, have you tried 7-11's Frawg? It's a pretty honest apple flavor, IMO.

I've only tried Jolly Rancher's green apple soda.

The thing is that Frawg isn't green apple, it's normal apple. The logo is green, however, which is misleading.

I can't remember who said it, but someone said that Frawg could be described as the apple version of Mt Dew. Blech, I don't know how they got to that conclusion. I couldn't stand the stuff.

If you wanna try a apple soda, try Martinelli's Sparkling Apple Cider. 100% Apple Juice that has been carbonated. Delish! Very similar to Appletizer.

Cool. I will look it up and see if I can easily get some. From your description, it sounds just what I have been craving. Thanks

We've still got Pepsi Vanilla here, thank goodness. Although I must say that I do like the Berries N Cream Dr Pepper, it'll be a sad day when I can't get any more Pepsi Vanilla. I still wish that they hadn't axed Pepsi Blue too... *shrugs* Oh well. The Doomite Is Out!

Pepsi Vanilla is Discontinued. I see it at the store all the time!

Luckily, I have 3 fridgepacks of Vanilla Coke. I plan on selling them on Ebay in the future.

Popboy

Pepsi Vanilla is not easy to find around these parts, but we still have tons of Vanilla Coke left at smaller supermarkets.

It seems like Wal-Mart is the quickest to ditch Soda Pop as soon as it's discontinued...

Above I posted about Mt Dew Pitch Black II with 11/05 date. Today I stopped back at that store. The Pitch Black was gone but behind me in the Coke cooler (actually it was a Full Throttle cooler) was a treasure trove of discontinued Coke products in 20oz. What caught my eye was C2. Checked the date and it was 1/06. Next to it was several bottles of Sprite Berryclear with a 2004 code date. Vanilla Coke with an early 2005 date. Diet Sprite (not Zero) with a late 2004 in front of the Sprite Zero.

Well, with Wal-Mart, you're going to turn all your inventory over pretty regularly, but with some of those small mom and pop stores, you'll sell a lot of the bigger brands, but other stuff can linger on and on...

And those small stores that have 12 packs, but they don't go on sale, well, that's a good place to usually find weird stuff, if the store somehow got it (product launch, salesperson order, mispick, whatever).

Shouldn't the route man be rotating? The cooler did have a Coca Cola Enterprise sticker so it was not the stores cooler. Heck where I work Pepsi does not bother to rotate. Superman 2 liters are pushed to the back with fresh dates blocking them. When Dr Pepper's new 12 pack design came in they were placed on top of the old package. New Sierra Mist labels in front of old. We are fairly high volume and have Pepsi in 5-6 days week so the product turns. If they rotated Superman would have flown out last month.

This is sort of related.

The grocery store I shop had a real good sale for their store brand of sugar kool aid mix(20oz container). The sale price was 2 for $3. IMO the store brand is just about the same as the brand name mix.

I decided at that price I would buy a few bottles.
The shelf had been rotated with bottles with use dates in the middle of 2005.LOL I'm extremely careful about getting the freshest stuff. LOL I found the freshest bottles buried at the back of the shelf, which is to be expected. I was not expecting to find end codes of over a year on the shelf.

It appears that stock rotation is a dying art. I guess that is why I'm supper careful when I go grocery shopping.

One of our Wal-Marts just installed new shelving that has rollers. The entire soda aisle looks a little funny but its great for rotation and customers trying to get to product. Everytime someone buys one they all move foward. The old shelving held 6 cases deep (with 3x4s) 3 cases with Fridge mates so you had to dive for product.

I can foresee a law suit when some jerk pushes the shelving unit and it gets slammed into some customer's face. LOL

I can tell you where I work... stock rotation is a big, big deal. Well in my department anyway. But then again I work at a grocery store! And it is not really beverage related.

Too bad, because the soda is not rotated very well, if at all. :(

Mr Zabe
12-08-2006, 12:31 AM
David,
Actually the soda pop front line people are so busy humping product that they don't always have the time to rotate. I do not fault those guys, they work their b#tts off as it is.

But when we do it in the grocery section, the supervisor becomes annoyed because we are working too slowly. So we don't rotate..

Retail stores want their product stocked quickly and cheaply as possible. If that means there is poor rotation, so be it. Sigh..
