View Full Version : What is the Best Rootbeer?

10-17-2005, 11:50 PM
There are tons of Rootbeers out there and tons of Rootbeer review sites but what in your opinion is the best? Name runner ups as well.

10-18-2005, 12:04 AM
I'd have to say Sprecher.

Barq's for its' bite, A&W for its' smoothness. Maybe Stewarts as well.

I'm more partial to birch beer. Boylans all the way!

My child hood favorite.....Dog & Suds

I'm not into the smaller company Root Beers,I just rather fly commercial. LOL

10-18-2005, 12:41 AM
I grew up in Mississippi. When I was a kid, I lived on locally bottled, pre-Coke, cane sugar Barq's. It's still pretty good, but not the same. A&W or IBC wasn't bad, either.

10-18-2005, 12:53 AM
A&W on tap is my favorite. Reminds me of going to A&W and getting a Rootbeer Float. Still looking for that Barqs Floatz to come out here (MI)...

I love regular and Diet A&W. Nods also go to Santa Cruiz Organic Root Beer.

10-18-2005, 09:06 AM
Sprecher for me.

10-18-2005, 10:32 AM
Dad's - which I can't get around here.

Nobody better say Mug. That stuff is vile.

10-18-2005, 11:49 AM
Maybe because I'm not accustomed to drink Root beer... but I don't like it.

I only drank Barq's once (because it's a Coke product and because of curiosity) and IMO tasted like a Coke without gas mixed with mint and Nestea.

Your too kind. LOL
Did you ever wonder why Bart's root beer rhymes with Farts. (Just a joke.)

IMO Barts is not drinkable.

Culver's Rootbeer is the best rootbeer i have had but i'm sure there are alot better ones out there

10-18-2005, 07:07 PM
culver's is probably just mug.

10-18-2005, 07:17 PM
Frostop. Either at a drive in or in those big bottles from Michigan.

10-18-2005, 09:39 PM

10-18-2005, 10:16 PM
Spring Grove from Minnesota or Seymour Beverages from Wisconsin!

Boylans is pretty good. So is the Birch Beer and Sarsaparilla from Kutztown (PA).
This summer I picked up some Root Beer from Point Brewery (Stevens Point, WI) and my dad loved it. Said it tasted like the stuff he used to drink as a kid.

Cap'n Eli's & Frostop are tops, but Abita, Sparky's, Boylan's, Dog & Suds, & Sprecher are also good. Yes, most of these have already been mentioned.

Barq's seems to be better on tap.

Dad's & A&W are also good if you can get them in glass with cane sugar!

10-19-2005, 02:48 AM
I'm pretty keen to Barq's and IBC but I haven't tried any of the ones like hires or dads.

10-19-2005, 10:17 AM
Culvers Root Beer is a small Root Beer brand owned and supplied by Cadbury...the taste is very similar to...well you guess...

10-20-2005, 12:59 AM
Barq's...'nuff said

10-20-2005, 01:28 AM
For me, the one I just drank a couple of hours ago, as long as it's in this container.....(came across this at a gas station on a road trip through western WY a few weeks ago, hadn't seen one of these in ages)

Some centerfold. LOL
Ice cold treat indeed.

10-21-2005, 10:19 AM
I'd have to go with IBC and Barqs

I am not much of a root beer fan. Root beer is not a very strong category around here so there isn't much selection other than the usual A&W, Barqs and Mug.I will drink an A&W (out of a 20 oz vending machine) if I get the urge to drink a root beer. I had a root beer in Texas last time I was there I think Frostie or Frosty was the brand. It was in a 12oz (Ithink) glass bottle at a Loves Travel Stop, it was good stuff. Cokes Barqs and Pepsis Mug are both undrinkable swill IMO.

Frosty in the bottle was around in a vending machine at the YMCA when I was a kid. It is a very good root beer. I used to drink a bottle most every Saturday morning while hanging out with my fellow delinquents. LOL

I love them all.. but currently Im really enjoying the SOHO Natural Root Beer, which has some Cane Sugar in it. I think its one of the better root beers Ive had in a while. - http://www.bevnet.com/reviews/soho_natural/

of course, you have your juggernaut brands, a & w and mug, however in terms of quality, they are actually pretty poor. my brand, Olde Philadelphia Gourmet Soda, uses real sugar cane, and all natural ingredients. i'm not telling you to buy my stuff, just check out my website.

Sprechers, Virgils, and a cold A&W or my three favorite rootbeers.

11-13-2005, 09:18 PM
Berghoff. Cane sugar, available in quarts. Nice!

No Soda
11-15-2005, 09:45 PM
IBC (nice glass bottles and a great taste) and of course, Foxon Park. I miss Ramblin' Root Beer (a discontinued Coke product) too.

11-16-2005, 05:42 AM
I picked up some Dad's in glass with real sugar last week, now that's some good rootbeer!

11-17-2005, 10:58 AM
Hank's man. Hank's is the best.

11-17-2005, 12:54 PM
I like Dad's & A&W. XS just came out w/a root beer flavor. It's not that bad.

Jones root beer is da bomb! That mixed with pepsi blue is awesome!

07-06-2007, 09:38 PM
A&W & Barq's are my favorite root beer.

07-06-2007, 10:21 PM
Diet Hank's Root Beer is my favorite. Diet A&W isn't bad, either.

07-06-2007, 11:44 PM
For Diet, I like Diet Barq's myself.

07-07-2007, 09:45 AM
Barq's is nasty. I don't care for the "spicy" root beers.

07-07-2007, 11:23 AM
Dad's is probably my favorite. Barq's is good too.

07-07-2007, 09:46 PM
I'd have to say Sprecher.!

could NOT AGREE MORE!! Its too damn bad the shipping is so much, or I would have it around the house all the time.

07-08-2007, 01:54 AM
To me, Diet Barq's is quite different from its sugary counterpart.

Sprechers is pretty damn good. and the ability to go to the store and get single bottles for 69 cents or cases on sale for 13 dollars is pretty nice too.

DAD'S!!!!!!!! No doubt about it. I can only find it at Walgreens in liters. Mug second,A & W third. Barq's no way. Used to like it but it has "bite" and they ain't kidding. So Dad's wins. I wish I could find it in cans again. Don't care for the liters.

07-09-2007, 09:12 AM
Bulldog Root Beer is quite delicious. It's made with cane sugar. (World Market is the only place I've ever seen it)

07-09-2007, 09:44 AM
Barq's and Jones are my favorite. I'm really starting the like the A&W too, maybe the the new can design.

07-09-2007, 11:59 AM
A & W Draft ! ! ! ! !

07-09-2007, 03:06 PM
Crush Birch Beer

07-09-2007, 09:03 PM
STEWART'S Rootbeer! No close contender!:)

Mr Zabe
07-09-2007, 10:33 PM
NOT....at least not for me. LOL

The best Big Three root beer IMHO
is A&W with Dad's a close second.
Oh,Hines and Dog-n-suds are also on
my A-List.

I just had to chime in again.
I have been drinking A&W Root Beer over the Christmas holiday.
Gosh almighty, A&W Root Beer out of an ice cold can has to be
one of the most satisfying soda pops I have ever drank.

Unbelievably fine root beer soda pop in all regards. YUM

12-28-2008, 10:03 PM
Mug or IBS

12-29-2008, 12:28 AM
Frostie and then Dog n Suds

Mug or IBS

Man you need to drop the company man mentality on here, Mug is horrible. It is one of if not the worst root beer made. I personally am not a root beer fan, but if the urge to drink one comes about I will partake in an A & W or an IBC.

Mr Zabe
01-01-2009, 11:52 AM
I agree. Mugs and Bart's root beer are the bottom of the barrel.

01-03-2009, 10:07 PM
Down here in Texas we have a chain of grocery stores called H-E-B, I have to tell you, their rootbeer has to be one of the best, simply called H-E-B Old Fashioned Root Beer.

Mainstream I would have to say A&W Rootbeer.

01-04-2009, 12:00 AM
I like A&W from tap.

01-04-2009, 03:05 AM
Anyone in addition to myself like Hansens? Their Creamy Root Beer is very good, (cane sugar) and, as I mentioned in another thread recently, I think their Diet (splenda/ace-K) is the best diet root beer I've ever had.

01-08-2009, 07:27 PM
I like several, I like barqs for a commercial brand.
I love dad's (orca bottle works..made with pure sugar)
Virgil's is a fine brew also.

Boylans makes a nice birch beer

01-24-2009, 04:21 PM
could NOT AGREE MORE!! Its too damn bad the shipping is so much, or I would have it around the house all the time.

I have to agree Dad's is great all I drink here in Utah. Fact is my friend in Oak Harbor, WA had me send him some using the U.S. flat rate bokes he likes it too...

Mr Zabe
01-24-2009, 05:01 PM
I enjoy Dad's Root Beer out of a glass bottle.
I'm still on a major A&W Root Beer kick.
Straight out of an ice cold can, A&W Root Beer
blows me away. The ending mouth finish
has an awesome cream like taste. :)

01-26-2009, 06:29 PM
Tapped A and W is good. You know what else is pretty good is the Jones Cane Sugar Rot Beer in the Cans. I am drinking one right now and it isn't half bad. Neither is BulllDog Root Beer in the bottles.

02-04-2009, 07:33 PM
Bulldog Root Beer.

Made with cane sugar.

'nuff said.

02-08-2009, 05:00 AM
IBC out of a bottle is very good. So is Barqs, if I'm in the mood for that "bite"

But probably my favorite is good ole smooooth A&W.

By the way, A&W's vanilla creme soda is excellant as well.

02-08-2009, 05:44 AM
Cracker Barrel Old Country Store has a vintage box of Orca-bottled sodas (Dad's, Nesbitt's Orange, Bubble Up) for sale in their store. Cost Plus also sells some of the Orca brands, I've bought Bubble Up and NuGrape there previously.

02-11-2009, 11:19 AM
For major brands, I like the smoothness and balanced flavor of A&W. My second choice would be Barq's for a more snappy and vigorous taste.

In the niche market, I like Capt'n Eli's Root Beer (bottled in Portland, Maine). It has a more complex and sophisticated taste compared with the major brands.
