Thats good. Im not a fan of energy drinks like Red Bull and stuff. Yuck. I do like Vault which seems just like a pop even though it is supposedly part energy drink, so hopefully it will be something like that. Have you tried Vault yet? If so how do the two compare?

Chad.
10-25-2005, 04:26 PM
i have tried both vault and mdx and they both are like regular sodas vault is more like surge in taste and mdx is more like surge in color, either way both are good. and mdx is definately better than regular mountain dew, i think mountain dew has a horrible aftertaste.

Thanks for the info Chad. I look forward to trying MDX for the first time. Hopefully the grenness will remind me of surge lol.

Please don't take Red Bull's taste as your average energy drink flavor. Red Bull falls short in the taste department compared to most of the others. Look at Bevnet's review if you must.

I wasn't using Red Bull that way. That is the only energy drink I am familiar with and I have only tasted one sip of an energy drink ever and whatever it was I didn't like it. I was just using it as an example. Yes I have heard that its taste is poor compared to some. Just as long as MDX tastes less like an energy drink and more like a pop I will be happy.

I saw a huge stack of crates full of MDX at the grocery store yesterday. They were priced 2 for $3.00. That doesn't strike me as a remarkable deal, especially for a brand new drink. If it's really supposed to compete with Vault then Vault is obviously going to have a pretty big edge price-wise.

I didn't feel the urge to buy any at the time, but I kinda wish I had now. It might be good.

Just my two cents.

How many ounces are the bottles?
I'm just about sure that MDX will not be sold or
priced like a soda pop but like an Energy Drink. I recall reading on this board that MDX will be slotted in the energy drink section and not the soda pop section.

For those reasons (energy drinks retail form $2 to $4 a can/bottle) 2 for $3.00 is a good value that will be attractive to current energy drinkers and energy drinker wannabes.

I do not see MDX going head to head with Vault.
Vault will be pit against Mountain Dew for market share.

MDX is sold in 14oz bottles only.

iluvsurge220
10-26-2005, 12:35 PM
Wow, I thought it was going to be priced like pop. I'm a tightwad, so I don't even like paying $1 for a 20 oz. unless I just have to have one. Usually I will buy a 2-liter for 99 cents because it's more and lasts longer. Back to the point, lol, I will probably try MDX just becuase it is new but I'm not gonna pay $1.50 for a 14 oz. beverage very often. There is no way MDX can compete with Vault at these prices.

DJ HawaiianShirt

16oz bottles? Not bad. I honestly wish all sodas came in 16oz too. I'm kinda tired of the American view that bigger is better. It's hard not to finish a 20oz sometimes because they go flat, even if you reseal the cap. And it doesn't hurt to watch the calories.

I'm agree with you, here in Mex., 600 ml sodas price are around 5 or 6.50 pesos (50 or 65 cents) and compared with a soda in U.S. that costs $1 dollar looks expensive for me, and $1.50 ($15 pesos) for a 14 oz. (398 ml) drink even looks more expensive. Here you can get a 450 ml Coke for $4.50 pesos (45 cents)

Now,now I can only speak for myself (granted I'm an a very limited income; if I truly like/love a particular soda pop and I'm out and about, an extra 25 to 40 cents or so is not going to cause me much of a problem. Now I probably would not buy a case of the stuff but I believe in the splurge system(life is too short) when I impulsively buy single soda pops.

I'm not exactly sure how to spell it, but you could buy a 600mL Pepsi for 3 or 4 Q's which is about 35 -40 cents in US dollars, so I loved it going down there. I bought tons of pop and brought all the bottles back to the states with me lol. Now when I want to buy a pop here I think about how cheap it was.

Well let me think. I think $1 is equal to about 8 quetzales, so I suppose I was a little off. It was more like 40-50 cents for a 600mL, but that is still pretty cheap. Sorry for the previous miscalculations LOL. smile.gif

It might be good. the lowest i have seen it priced is 1.19 - i think 1.50 is going to be the norm for pricing - considering most energy drinks are smaller and more expensive. people who like mountain dew or energy drinks will probably pay the 1.50 to try it...that doesnt mean they will continue to pay for it though.

We just got ours in today. Its kind of funny, our rep said how much they were planning to promote this drink but no one knew any details of it, other than its new.

I skimmed over the invoice, and price wise its actually cheaper for a case of MDX than regular MD. Its a small difference, but not enough to justify gouging. I have a feeling this drink will be joining the ranks of the $1.99+ energy drinks. I'm sure the first few months of sales will make or break its pricing, personally I wouldn't pay more than a regular MD for it.

As for the drink, its a 14 oz bottle with the same familar MD green to it, however with a different curvature to the bottle. The label boasts something about "Powerpack" on it, which might be what they refer to their 'energy blend' as. Ingredient wise, its typical with taurine and such.

The taste is very drinkable for an energy drink and very similar to the original and not like AMP.

Did the case cost reflect a promotional discount or was the cost per case normal? Does your store have a volume discount per case purchased?

I saw MDX at the grocery store, it was in a 14 oz. bottle for $1.49. This is way to much for me to pay for a product that didn't look all that good.

Tried some of the sugar free MDX today.

Some observations:

It tastes not unlike the horde of Dew-alikes that have roamed the beverage landscape across time.

There is a lot of food coloring in it. So much so that the fizz is that same sickly green color.

The sugar free version has one of the weirdest sweetener mixes I've ever seen. It's sweetened with (in order of appearance) aspartame, sucralose, ace-k, inverted sugar syrup (?), and strawberry juice from concentrate (!). It also contains citrus pectin, presumably as a thickening agent for that corn syrupy texture. None of these are listed in the ingredients to normal MDX.

Mr Zabe
11-01-2005, 08:37 AM
I will try it for myself but from you observations MDX surgar free sounds either cutting edge or a drain donation. I have never seen four sweetener ingredients along with a fruit juice in any kind of Diet soda pop or drink.

I wounder if Pepsi will use this formula as a selling point for MDX and or use it in other diet brands. Just my Gut feeling, Diet Vault might just have a better taste which will in the long run keep Diet MDX's appeal down. We will just have to wait and see.

I just read the two major grocery store sales adds for next coming
Chicago area weekly sales.
Starting this Thursday, Jewel Foods will have MDX both sugar and sugar free for sale. The introductory sales prices is listed at 2 for $3.

I will for sure get both varieties
and report back.

Now bring on the Vault already. :(

I tried both regular and sugar free MDX today. The regular MDX was quite good. I haven't tried Vault and I don't really remember what Surge tasted like, but to me it kind of tasted like a cross between Full Throttle, dnL, and regular Dew. I did detect a little bit of that all-too-familiar "energy drink aftertaste", but it's not nearly as strong as in most energy drinks.

Now on to the sugar free version - if you've ever wondered what a sweeter, less strong version of Red Bull would taste like, here's your chance. Sugar Free MDX has a strange, sickeningly sweet flavor that is not much like regular MDX at all. It does have a noticeable berry flavor to it, which I guess makes sense considering the presence of strawberry juice concentrate in the product. It also seems to have more of an "energy drink aftertaste" than the regular version. Overall, this drink is nasty and I don't know what the folks at Pepsi were smoking when they decided to use this strange sweetner blend.

I just bought my first MDX. I paid $1.99 for it so it better be good. I haven't tried it yet as I am still working on the pepsi I had for lunch but once I try it I will share my opinion with you all. I like the color of it already. Reminds me somewhat of Surge.

PS
11-02-2005, 02:48 PM
I just paid $1.79 just outside of Columbus, OH. It tasted more like an energy drink than a soda to me, mainly because it was sweeter. I also felt almost no kick after drinking it.

iluvsurge220
11-02-2005, 02:54 PM
I think it tastes more like a pop. I can definitely taste the Mountain Dew in it, and the guarana and taurine. It really isn't that bad. I don't think it tastes like Vault or Surge at all though.

iluvsurge220
11-02-2005, 02:58 PM
Well, now that I have started drinking more of it, I can kind of taste Vault or Surge. I can't really remember what Surge tastes like though. It is pretty good, but it isn't worth $2 for a 14 oz. bottle.

I just tried it yesterday and it's nothing special.

I would rather have 20oz of real Dew or 8oz of Amp rather than 14oz of half and half.

having a Mountain Dew MDX right now, it was hard to find any, one "display cooler" was sold out and the only other place I could find it just threw some of the 14oz bottles on a top shelf near the energy drinks, $1.79 a piece or 2/3...

no sugar frees were out yet..

MDX is good, a slight variation on regular dew taste.. iwouldnt say any better or worse than regular dew, definately not worth the inrease in price over regular dew based on flavor, not sure about the "kick" compared to dew, in that regard, it might be a decent deal compared to red bull and other energy drinks, and with a good flavor..

i am interested how they'll market MDX and AMP now..

I thought it tasted maybe 30% sweeter than MD.
I also thought it had slightly more carbonation than MD. My guess is that a sweeter more carbonated drink might "drown down" the taste of the energy components.

Just my mainly uneducated thought. LOL
