I believe the short answer is that there IS a difference, but some of the Pibb fans here could give you a better explanation.

Im not really sure what the differance is but I like the original more. It seems that xtra has more syrup that original.

I think the flavor is intended to have a bit more of a cinnamon kick.
Though, I think it is a makerting ploy to change the formaula, and increase brand awarness.
I say, bring back Mr. Pibb!

I think I like the new one better, but I barely remember the old one. I did find some pibb zero today and I think it is great, probably the best zero drink I've had.....but it isn't available around here, I found it while I was out of town.

pibb xtra is in a few fountains around here, we have cans but they can be tricky to find and I never see 20 oz bottles....no pibb zero anywhere.

You can get Xtra in cans in the Twin Cities but only if you go to high volume places. Its rare but its out there. 20oz as well.

Pibb Xtra is "spicier" than the original. I tell people the Xtra means extra flavor (most people thought it meant extra caffeine, for some reason).

The taste is cleaner and has a more pronouced bite then the original. I remember Mr. Pibb tasting flatter/syrupier than Xtra.
