Ok....I was thinking (which could be dangerous).

I remember as a kid that fast food stands, restaurants, and ice cream shops use to have paper straws.

Wonkapete or anyone else do you have any of these straws or recall using them?

I remember them. They tended to break down in liquid, which probably doomed them.

I too remember the straws, we used to get them with our milk in grade school.

Yep, I remember them too. I have some pepsi-cola ones somewhere. They are paper and have pepsi-cola written down them.

I forgot about those. They still make them for gluing to the sides of model rockets as the launch rod tubes.

The first and last time I ever saw paper straws was in 1993 at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA. My dad told me that they probably used paper instead of plastic so people wouldn't slip on the straws if they were littered around? I guess its an ok theory.

I remember watching Mr. Wizard on Nickelodeon in the early 1990's growing up, and he used paper straws in a lot of his experiments, and I always said "Now where do you find paper straws at?!"
