View Full Version : Coke to alter cans
08-20-2002, 12:05 AM
There is a clip in todays USA Today Money Section B. It appears Coca_cola is changing back their logo to much of what it looked like around 1980. The ribbon is a bit different. But the can is the older red color, and it also appears they have removed the "Classic" label. The new can just say's "Coca-Cola". I think the new can will be a hit because it looks cool, also way to go on droping the "Classic".

Yeah, I heard about that... Does anyone have an online pic of the new label?
08-20-2002, 01:49 PM
It looks like the Coke graphics from the early 1980s kinda but alittle more modern looking.
Overall it does not look any different to a person that does not really pay attention to the graphics... So those people probably will not know the difference other than the fact that the writing is not slanted anymore.
I honestly do not know why Coke is mentioning this graphics change this early. Because this will not take effect until 2003 worldwide.

Hopefully it will say Coke on one side and Coca-Cola on the other in the U.S. like it does everywhere else in the world!
But if I know Coke they will probably wait awhile before they do that again in the U.S.

Here is a pic of the new logo...
and, Diet Vanilla Coke...

Also, North American markets will keep the word "Classic" on the cans/bottles. Dynamic Ribbon is horizontal on bottles, vertical on cans.

Oh, what the hell.. Here's Choglit:

Nice logo update.
The only problem I have is that KO is changing logos like every couple years now. Lots of assets, from vending machines to delivery trucks, have life spans measured in decades, and are painted up with logos that are two or three generations old.
08-20-2002, 10:36 PM
samc - you are absolutely right/. i see plenty of Pepsi trucks with that old old old logo on them.
I love the new diet vannilla coke logo. there was an onion article about how DVC supposedly will hold up our economy, bheard it was very funny but i missed it.

I like all the logo changes because I collect cans so it helps me out better this way. Plus I like doing graphic work and the new logos always help me create new stuff and not get tired of the same old thing.
Do you have pics of the cans and 2 liter bottles? What will the North American ones look like?

Hey fusion can you tell us how you can post images here on bevnet? nobody seems to be able to do it.
08-21-2002, 11:53 AM
The new Coke logo is a huge improvement. Diet Vanilla looks nice too. Even Cholitz which sounds like junk has a fair logo. But what about Sprite!?!?!?! The 80's are over!
08-21-2002, 12:07 PM
The current Sprite logo is from 1994, So its more like the 90s are over.
I'm sounding like a broken record too lol
Why is Coke keeping the word classic? This is stupid because there is no regular Coca-Cola in the U.S. anymore.
08-21-2002, 12:47 PM
There's the 12 pack/can/ 20oz bottle of the new look
08-21-2002, 12:48 PM
Oh, and the DVC look is excellent! they should brush up on the regular VC
08-21-2002, 01:05 PM
Wow, thanks for the picture, Zipster..
The 12 pack box looks simple and uncluttered.. And thank goodness they are getting rid of the silly "sensational" graphics.. People have actually asked me if there are bottles inside of the 12 packs.. LOL! I always joked and asked "Is that blood coming out of the bottle?" 'cause Coke sure isn't red..

Like we say in the automotive industry: "Paint it blue and call it new." Will the new packaging change the product though? Of course not.
08-21-2002, 07:00 PM
They must spend a ton of time and effort dwelling on these changes, and for what? Coke is Coke in my book, regardless of the label. I honestly probably would not have noticed the change unless someone pointed it out, even then I would have to hold the 2 cans together to really notice the difference. I know it probably jumps out to you guys, but I don't think your average consumer would really notice or care.
08-21-2002, 11:20 PM
Your right the average consumer would not notice or care.
Thanks for posting the pics though. So where is the word classic going to be placed? under the middle of the word Coca-Cola? or under the last 3 letters of cola?
Maybe it will be in the small writing near or under Nutrition Facts?
I don't see the word classic on any of the pics I ran into yet.
08-22-2002, 12:24 AM
It will just be "Coca-Cola"

The 'classic' might be useful to distinguish from VC or CC, but I think its about time they dropped that designation. *real* coke is back.

hehe xlogold u cought me! :D I meant it looks really 80's.
Coke's new logo is a minor but very welcome update.

cans of the new packaging for Coca-Cola are already available on ebay.
The new fridge pac packages are on my local shelves (CCBCC area), but the cans inside and the other sizes are still the old graphics. Guess they ran out of boxes before they ran out of cans.
Anybody who would pay anything for a package that will be, within a few months, replicated 10000000000000 times throughout the world on Ebay is crazy.
12-20-2002, 10:22 PM
When are these new cans gonna land?
12-22-2002, 03:34 AM
The re-designed Coke cans are out in CCE Indianapolis, IN (HO). They are much better than the last logo. There is a neet little picture of a coke bottle on the side made of bubbles. They also use the word "Coke" again. Unfortunately they have not droped the "Classic", but have made it smaller in lettering. They have released the cans here, but so far no cardboard packaging. They use suitcases, and the old 12-packs here.
12-22-2002, 07:40 AM
I like how they made a computerized contour bottle with bubbles too. For the first time since new Coke in the U.S. and Canada this actually has a designer background.
The word Coke is used again but in a new font... I have not personally seen the packaging yet, but I have seen pics so far.
The word classic is in another font as well yet kinda looks like the traditional classic font...if you ask me it looks like it doesn't belong there, but anyways from the pic the word classic looks a little bigger in my opinion, but then again I have only seen the pics so far. The dynamic ribbon has a very modern look to it. These cans will be across the U.S. by 2003. They will be released across the world during 2003.
The new diet Coke logo will be released in early 2003, the U.S. and Canada will be the first to get the new packaging. The new logo's will be on caffeine free and lemon as well.
12-23-2002, 08:33 PM
They have now switched the cardboard suitcases and old style 12-packs here to the new logo.
12-23-2002, 11:52 PM
New cans have landed here. Very much nicer than the old ones!. No new 12 pack boxes yet though. oh well!
12-25-2002, 07:04 AM
Wal-Mart in Herkimer,NY is now the first in the Utica area to get the new look cans in 12 pack.
01-05-2003, 03:02 PM
So far the only new graphics I seen were on the 12 packs, the cans inside them were the old graphics though.
