How would you compare Hires, Barq's and IBC? Also, I found (but didn't try) "Dad's Root Beer" in Huntsville yesterday. Anyone tried that?
Please rate all the root beers you've tried. Thanks.

i think dad's root beer is terrible.
i haven't seen hires in forever because when pepsi bought mug root beer, they stopped bottling a&w root beer and so 7up took that over and stopped bottling hires, therefore, i haven't seen or had a hires rootbeer in ages, i actually yearn for one.
i'm not a barq's fan.
IBC is aaaaaaaaaaaalright.
a&w is great.
So is GOose Island/Frosttop.

Of the four you mentioned, I'd have to rate IBC #1, Dad's #2, Barq's #3, and Hire's #4. My favorite is A&W at the restaurant in a one gallon jug.

Yeaaahhh, A&W on tap IS good.
Ok, so it's...
Goose Island/Frost Top?
Please continue, friends.

Never had Hires, Dad's is OK, IBC is pretty good but very rare. MUG is total horse ****, Barq's is good for a cheap soda. A&W fountain style in a big class mug. Its just heavenly thinking about it. So but even in a bottle or can its still #1. But Barq's does have bite ;)

The best Root Beers IMHO, in no particluar order:
Dog N' Suds(nothing to do with bathtime for Fido!)
A&W is the best mass production RB, but down a notch from the 1975 launch product. I liked Ramblin', but it's gone. Barq's and Hires can be good on tap, but only fair in cans or bottles. Sam's choice was one of the better generics. Barq's was better before CC bought them.

Here's my opinion:
American Bottlings is like water without fizz.
8. Mug (Pepsi's "On-Tap" was better)
Mug tastes like dish soap!

I have seen Ramblin Rootbeer in Central Illinois recently I believe. I'll keep my eyes open next time I'm there.

Here is my opinion on the subject. In no particular order:
2. Goose Island
4. A&W out of the tap
6. Henry Weinhards
There are a few others I can't remember right now.

Lemme add mine (in no order):

2. Boylan's Creamy Red
In no particular order I would have to say:
-BJ's Chicago Pizza Rootbeer. (goes great with their pizza)
-Barq's from Baton Rouge because it is pure cane sugar and not the mass produced garbage of Coke

Silly me. I forgot Frostop, a great Root Beer. If you like maple, then Tommyknocker is good.

I'll rate the root beers in glass bottles:
Bavarian Nutmeg Virgil's
Dad's [cane sugar]
A&W cane sugar
X Root Beer
Journey Shenandoah Sassafras
Really, it's amazing anyone would ever buy a canned root beer with so many great ones in bottles...

I found Abita at a nearby liquor store. I was suprised to find that it was a pretty subtle root beer, with no unique taste. Is this how the stuff tastes, or did I buy an old batch?

A&W.....oh yeah....A&W is the best root beer I've had, I had Boylan's, Frostie, and Sprecher, and they just weren't the same to me. I guess I have cheap tastebuds.
I can drink Barq's, but I prefer A&W. I hate Mug. I do wish that Coke would drop Barq's though, and pick up A&W. Used to be easier to obtain, as when it was Coke, I could get it easier. It is very hard finding products from the 3rd wheel when Dr Pepper or 7-Up wasn't under its control. Now 7-Up is, and availability isn't getting any easier. Markets have very little A&W around, and finding in a C-store up here is next to impossible, mostly just Pepsi, and a little Coke.

My favorite Root Beers are:
1. Sams Choice
3. Giant super market Brand
4. Weis super market brand
5. Diet A&W with aspartame. MMMmmmmm.
They're all good!

Out of what you listed, I'd put IBC at the top. But there are definitely better root beers out there that made me wonder what the hell I was drinking out of those IBC bottles.
1. Harpoon's Vermont Draft
A lot of people have mentioned Stewart's which baffles me. I find it to be pretty weak and sugary.
this guy likes Hank's but hates the "weird" herbal brews....
(with "rounds" of testing)

I've only tried two, Root Beer isn't very wellknown here in Sweden!
A&W was good (tried this in the US)
Old Keg was good (found this in Sweden but it's an American brand)
Here's a link to the latter, nobody has mentioned in this thread so maybe it's not very well known?

Lyons from a fountain keg was best (40 years ago in LA area)
Next - A&W in store
A&W - best diet RB

Going to have to agree with many...
#1 - Goose Island (this stuff is amazing!)
#2 - A&W Draft Root Beer from Store
#3 - A&W
#4 - Barq's
#5 - IBC
I really love that Goose Island , however... and A&W/Barqs are both very good. Recently got some Hires when I was out in Rockford, IL.. but must say I dont think its all that amazing.
Never was a huge fan of Dad's or Mug.

nobody mentioned Ramblin' root beer, that's Coke's flagship root beer brand.

You all need to try BullDog Root Beer. Thats my favorite now. Very Good. A&W tasting but creamier. Get some.

ramblin's practically dead unless you go to an old fountain and see the sticker. i never see ramblin, it's always barq's which is crap in my eyes.
