marked "limited edition" on boxes and cans...

just courious if this stuff has the same kind of caffine kick that the other MD products have ??

I wish. I checked around for it today and couldn't find any. BTW I'm in Cleveland.

08-18-2004, 09:14 PM
hmmm, ill have to go out later and check for it!

08-18-2004, 09:17 PM
found it in michigan. 2L and 20oz, no cans yet

08-18-2004, 11:23 PM
Got 3 free bottles of the black goodness. I love it!

08-18-2004, 11:31 PM
where was it free?

also, picked up a Mountain Dew: Blue Shock slurpee today at a local 7-11; yummy.

08-19-2004, 12:54 AM
Pitch Black is available in northern California (San Ramon to be exact.) I tried a bottle and there is a reason it's a limited edition soda. Not bad but it's not going to have legs. Not good enough really to be part of the regular line.

The grape taste is pretty week but does have that Mountain Dew bite to it. Nice packaging and presentation but again Pepsi is smart to make this available for a short time only.

It's here in Western Maryland. A friend alerted me to it today. Haven't seen it in a store myself though. I'll look tomorrow, and probably try it, even though I'm not much for Grape.

08-19-2004, 09:23 AM
I have been looking for it in the Harpers Ferry W.V., Frederick, MD (central Maryland)area but have not found it yet.

08-19-2004, 10:33 PM
i have now seen it in cans. out of HC/howell, michigan

Hi guys -- I've been visiting this forum for about 8 months now and finally decided to register. Just wanted to let you all know that pitch black is available in the southern maryland/dc metro area at the safeway chain. It's in 2 liter, 12 packs and 20oz bottles.

08-20-2004, 04:30 PM
Just found it here in NY. bought 10 bottles without even tasting it. if its dew, Ill drink it. I think its great, and Im sure the caffeine is there,.. thats the whole point to mountain dew. lol. bless you pepsi.

ive been mad excited to drink this for months now...will it rule as much as livewire? will it 0wn as much as baja?...

thanx to mervernator...and his hooking me up with a bottle..ill be finding out soon enough! =]

08-20-2004, 09:46 PM
It should be available in Sw Pa 2liter,12 pack can and 20 oz singles as of today.

08-21-2004, 12:16 AM
It's creeping into the north Texas area. I bought a 2-liter today. It has a really great label.

08-21-2004, 03:08 AM
Here in MD. Label looks cool. Haven't tried it yet, highly doubt I'll like it. Sold in 12 packs, 20 oz., and 2L already, which seems odd for a Pepsi rollout, considering their usual track record of just 20 oz., and sometimes the 6 packs (like w/Pepsi Edge).

08-21-2004, 10:57 AM
They're putting all sizes out now because of the limited-time-availability thing.

Still have not seen it in NW Indiana yet.

08-21-2004, 02:49 PM
I went to my local grocery store to buy a Mello Yello. I was surprised to see that 3 separate people in the line had Mountain Dew Pitch Black. It's seems to be flying off the shelves. Maby I will try this stuff.

08-21-2004, 02:52 PM
Wow. I guess people trust the Dew line, I know I do.

08-21-2004, 03:33 PM
Got it here in PHOENIX and its GREAT! It doesnt taste like your normal grape soda at all....

Anyone else notice how much PEPSI BLUE it tastes like?

08-21-2004, 05:28 PM
Anyone else notice how much PEPSI BLUE it tastes like?

nahhhhhhhh not at all like pep. blue...

the grape flavor DOES taste like a black grape.. less sweet and abit of punch...

i think it was a good idea to go with a less sweet grape and i applaud pepsi for it... (which i do very seldom)

08-21-2004, 07:02 PM
I agree-- it tastes similar to Pepsi Blue. *rejoice*

I like this much better than LiveWire, and even Code Red. Any indication whether we'll be getting this every fall?

08-22-2004, 09:48 PM
Tried some yesterday. Started with a nice grape flavor that faded after a few sips. Could not taste the Dew like I can in Livewire. I don't like Mt Dew but I would buy this again.

08-22-2004, 11:25 PM
picked up a fridge mate today, tastes like grabe bubbalicious or sugar free grape gum. tastes like no other grape soda, just like livewire tastes like no other orange. decent

The Doomite
08-23-2004, 01:24 AM
I saw it this past Friday at the local Safeway, picked up a 20 oz. bottle of the stuff yesterday. I like it a lot; like others have said, it doesn't really taste like any other grape flavored soda out there. Instead, I could almost detect a hint of the original (citrus) Dew flavor with the grape. Then again, I could be wrong there, I never really was a big Mt. Dew fan. As far as getting more of Pitch Black goes, if the price is right the next time I go on a 12-pack run, I think I'll get at least one Pitch Black 12-pack. The Doomite Is Out!

08-23-2004, 02:35 AM
Mt Dew Pitch Black is only available from a few places, mainly strong Pepsi areas from what I've seen.

PBG Cumberland and PBG Hagerstown sales centers have it. I've seen it in conventional 12 packs from Johnstown, and fake FridgeMates from Baltimore.

Nowhere in the immediate DC area can you find it, from either PBG or CPG-Charlottesvile, who services Prince William County.

RC Winchester doesn't have it yet either. When they start bottling it, I'll start trying it.

08-23-2004, 04:21 AM
Tried it yesterday at an ARCO gas station yesterday, the Mountain Dew Pitch Black. Sure tastes less grapey like in normal grape sodas. Couldn't taste Mountain Dew in it, maybe a bit of hint of it. Appalund to Pepsi!! It was available in 12-packs, 2-liters and 20 oz so far. Target today sold it for 79 cents for a 20 oz and 99 cents for a 2 liter.

Hey Titan -- I was in DC yesterday and saw it everywhere. I was in the Chinatown / Metro Center Area. Try CVS.

I know that Winchester and a couple other bottlers had Mountain Dew rights before Pepsi bought them, but how exactly do they get Code Red, Pitch Black, etc. Does Pepsi license those out? Or is it included because they're part of brand MD. If they're included would it be possible for DPSU to sell 7up Tropical Splash in the States or is that completely different?

08-23-2004, 03:04 PM
I love Pitch Black, its amazing!

Also, I was in Manhattan last thur/fri, couldnt find Mt Dew pitch black anywhere, nor live wire.. though I could find code red sporatically, and mt dew most everyhwere.

found it odd they werent pushing the dew hard in NYC?!

08-23-2004, 03:46 PM
Last thr/fri it wasn't officially released.

08-23-2004, 04:18 PM
well the point is.. i cant even find live wire in manhattan, and code red was near impossibile to find.. whats the push thru of pitch black going to be like?

08-23-2004, 10:32 PM
Had another today. This time I could taste the citrus flavor after about half the bottle.

08-24-2004, 09:50 AM
It's the end of summer and they're fazing out live wire accordingly.
Code Red is a terrible seller in north texas, maybe it does better there, but many places here won't bother carrying it anymore.

Pitch Black is new tho, it'll be hard not to see, but give 'em a week. It's not exactly easy to build displays overnight in every store across the counrty.

I was in las Vegas over the weekend and saw mt dew pitch black in a 7-eleven there. they had it in 12 pack cans and 20 ounce bottles. I wish I had got one to try. I'll wait til I see it here in LA. Has anyone from SoCal seen it yet?

08-24-2004, 08:05 PM
PhillySteve, those bottlers are RC Winchester and Dr Pepper West Jefferson.

As for what RC-W has, they have Mountain Dew, Diet Mountain Dew, Caffeine Free Mountain Dew, Caffeine Free Diet Mountain Dew, Mountain Dew Code Red, Diet Mountain Dew Code Red, and Mountain Dew LiveWire. They are included w/brand Dew, and all are produced at their facility in Winchester (code EB). I'll go back into WV and see if I can find it at Food Lion down in Romney or at Sheetz there.

As for DC, I checked in Wal-Mart, Kmart, Target, Giant, Safeway, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, and a couple of 7-11's, and an A-Plus. I didn't see it anywhere yet, as of Saturday. My guess is sometime this week they'll have it pretty much everywhere.

08-25-2004, 10:23 PM
I tried it and I didn't really like the thick grape taste. I really like the look of the can!
That was enough for me to buy it. I would not drink another.... one was enough.

08-26-2004, 01:36 AM
I'm w/you Energydude, I tried it today as well from PBG-Johnstown (code LE). I got it in 20 oz. It's OK tasting, but where's the Dew? It tasted at first like a carbonated grape Skittle in drink form, so I thought it was very thick in the grape taste, and lacked any taste of citrus.

Like anything from PBG Johnstown, it just didn't taste like anything right after the first drink.

The design of the can and the bottle is very cool. I really like it. However, I think in a lot of ways Pitch Black is built all on appearance and first impressions, but not to make lasting ones. I guess that's why it's a "Limited Edition".

Code Red and Livewire may not be as flashy in the logo, but I like the taste of both better.

08-26-2004, 01:15 PM
I tried it the other night and I really didn't care for it. The "grape" just didn't taste right.

08-26-2004, 01:30 PM
I had Pitch Black the other day and thought it was great! I like Baha Blast better though. I wish they would bottle that.

08-26-2004, 03:12 PM
Baha Blast = Dnl

Got it here in Memphis, Tennessee!!! It tastes great!!!! Love the look and flavor! Now if it can make it perhaps a diet will surface. I'm assuming "limited time" equates to "test marketing"????

Has anyone seen Pitch Black in Massachusetts yet? I haven't been able to find it.

Any chance of this being extended? And how are sales?

08-27-2004, 07:45 PM
Sales have to be better than C2 Coke.... what a flop!

The Pitch Black is cool looking but trust me..... leave it in the can.

08-27-2004, 07:56 PM
i left some in the can after drinking to bottles

08-27-2004, 08:24 PM
I like it a lot, Edude.

I was up in Chicago last week visiting family and my uncle asked me to check it out, nice bottle graphics but I didn't like the taste. Grape taste was yakh.. couldn't really drink much more than few sips. There's a reason it's limited time offer, Pepsi figured if it fails, they could always pull it off without any issues. Give em credit for sneaky marketing.

08-28-2004, 06:05 PM
Went to my local convience store to buy a Pitch Black but it was sold out! So I bought a Mello Yello. ;)

08-29-2004, 02:16 AM
I finally tried it. Not too bad, but it's one of those drinks that you only drink once. It hardly tasted like a Dew at all.

08-29-2004, 11:14 PM
I bought a 2L of it the other day...first glass of it I liked it, after that, I'd much rather have the green kind. I think it would be good mixed with a little vodka though... :D

08-31-2004, 10:59 AM
it's done well enough in michigan that pepsi has run out of 12pk cans

09-01-2004, 01:22 AM
I tried Baja Blast today, as I stopped in a Taco Bell. It does have a bit of a minty taste. My friend was w/me (a regular Dew drinker), and also found it very peculiar. I didn't taste much of a tropical flavor at all in it, and the lime just created a weird taste.

I think it's time to quit barraging the market w/Dew extensions. People aren't going to keep drinking products just because of the name on them. Code Red and Livewire I like, but they are starting to really stretch it, looking for something.

09-01-2004, 11:39 AM
Mountain Dew is the fourth largest soft drink brand in the country, why wouldn't they use that?

I'll agree that people will probably continue to buy a product based on taste rather than name.

Personally, I've never been a Mountain Dew drinker. But I love Baja Blast. If they decide to bottle it, I would buy it.

As for stretching the brand, I don't think it's any different from what Coke has done with Sprite, Mello Yello, Fanta (Citra anyone?), and even Diet Coke. If the market can support that many flavors, I'm all for it.

That's what I did with Sprite Tropical Remix. I don't really like lemon-lime, but I liked Remix and I bought it. I don't like Berryclear, and I don't buy it.

Nugrape with some dew in it.

If you want Grape, Drink Grape Nehi.

09-01-2004, 03:54 PM
no thanks, i'll drink pitch black.

09-01-2004, 09:32 PM
oh, sassy!

09-02-2004, 02:46 AM
Got it here in Greensboro, NC. I saw it first in 12pks which surprised me! Found a 20 oz. bottle of it, and I must say....IT'S NASTY!!! It actually burned my chest when I drank it. Pepsi Blue was MUCH better than this. This is just another reason why they should make Live Wire year round!!!!

09-04-2004, 07:16 AM
I like it.

I still prefer Baja Blast though.

09-04-2004, 04:38 PM
pepsi is still out of 12pk cans of pitch black. no one seems to know what the problem is.

09-06-2004, 10:45 PM
I like pitch black, it taste's like a grape popcicle!

09-07-2004, 01:06 PM
I tried Pitch Black just the other day, and I definitely liked it. It almost reminds me of a carbonated version of Kool-Aid's Purplesaurus Rex flavor from long ago (Grape Lemonade, of sorts).

03-06-2005, 02:22 PM
I miss Pitch Black! It mops the floor with LiveWire and Code Red as far as I'm concerned.
If those flavors can make it as a permanent fixture then I don't see why Pitch Black shouldn't be here to stay. I don't even like Mountain Dew that much, but Pitch Black was fantastic, like the previous poster said, it's like carbonated Kool-Aid.

03-06-2005, 07:03 PM
We still have Pitch Black in Indianpolis.
