View Full Version : Cherry Coke Zero Debuts

I found it Tuesday in South Carolina. 2L bottles, 12 packs of cans, and 20oz bottles. But only in one grocer so far. I suspect it will be more widespread by next week.

As for the taste...well...it tastes remarkably like Cherry Coke. It does have a fairly strong Cherry flavor, but not overpowering. It has a similar aftertaste to regular Coke Zero. I also found it to be pleasantly sweet.

It's one of the better mainstream diet soft drinks I've had.

Yup. Picked up a 2L a few days ago. Delicious. Now all they need to do is make a Caffeine Free Zero to put the final nail in Diet Coke's coffin (as far as I'm concerned).

Great Photo. Have not seen it here Boulder yet.

I find it funny that the tag line says

"Great Cherry Coke taste"

Ummm, I though the marketing wizards at Coke now call it Coca Cola Cherry.

Jeez, can't get something straight for once smile.gif

Haven't seen it yet. We only just started to get 20 oz. bottles of Coke Zero with the black label, and there's no sign of the new Cherry Coke look either.

That label looks a little too busy to me, and "Coca-Cola Cherry Zero" has to be one of the most convoluted names ever. But if it tastes good, all will be forgiven. smile.gif

not too bad but no dynamic ribbon and the cherries with a whole in them kinda looks strange. overall though its not a bad logo.

i agree about the name. everyone is going to call it "cherry coke zero"... it's just easier to say... and we've been saying cherry coke for decades now. what next? are they going to change diet coke to coca-cola diet? geesh!

anyway... i guess the important thing is that it tastes as good as original coke zero. smile.gif

i also agree about missing the dynamic coca-cola ribbon wave thing. i think they should use it whenever possible.

The Coca-Cola logo you mention was actually introduced in the USA for January of 1997.

From 1994-2003 Coca-Cola classic released new designs on their main cans/bottles every 3 years at that time.

All of them were introduced in January but had the previous year on them, with the exception of the current 2003 logo.

I bought a 2 liter today and sampled it for the first time. My very unscientific review...

I am impressed. I enjoy Cherry Coke occasionally but am not a real big fan of it. And I buy Coke Zero occasionally when I get feeling guilty about calories but I still much prefer the taste of Classic. IMO, the cherry flavoring here covers up a good bit of that "diet" flavor that I don't really like, but can tolerate. So yes I will be buying it again, and will likely prefer it over a Coke Zero. And this is an improvement over Diet Cherry Coke, which I have bought occasionally as well.

Just debuted at my local Wal-Mert (Kilgore, TX) this afternoon. BTW Coke has also changed the label of Coca-Cola Cherry to a similar design of the Cherry Zero label, except it has a pink tint (and the cherries have no holes).

First taste impressions was I wished the cherry flavor was just a little bit stronger and sweeter. Theres still a little aftertaste, but not as bitter as Coke Zero. If you thought Zero had too much of a "bite" you may like this better.

But I'm drinking it from a "hot" 2 Liter bottle on ice, hopefully the cherry taste will be stronger after it gets chilled for a few hours. Update: serving it cold helped but the cherry flavoring is still a little soft for my tastes, still its very drinkable..

Overall it's a huge improvement over the old Diet Coke with Cherry/Diet Cherry Coke.

I also tried the 20 oz bottle today from a checkout aisle cooler at K-Mart in Longview TX. (also picked up two more 2 liters!) It had a much stronger cherry taste than the 2 liter bottle I bought and reviewed yesterday. Even on a cold 35 degree day it tasted great.

I finally got to try this today, and I have to say I was a little underwhelmed. Yeah, the flavor is pretty much like the original, and there's little if any diet aftertaste, but it just wasn't sweet enough. And just to make sure it wasn't an issue with my taste buds, I took a swig of the Diet Code Red 20 oz that I bought, and that had the right level of sweetness.

I'll try it again when it comes to my area (I drove about a half hour to a store serviced by Philly bottlers), but I can't say that this gave a good first impression.

My local Chicago grocery store now has Coke Zero Cherry 2lts. There were no trial size or single cans in the cooler. I decided to wait another week before I buy a 2ltr.

I did find something strange. There was a bin near the check out of warm 12oz Cherry Coke btls for .50 cents each. I ran to the bin thinking they were Coke Zero Cherry. LOL I bought a few so as to give Cherry Coke a fresh taste. LOL

I saw Pepsi Lime fridge packs,Tab fridge packs, and new art design for the Minute Maid drink fridge packs, which looked real cool. They are very appealing with the way the fruit looks.

Usually my local Chicago (Arlington Heights,IL) Jewel has a facing of TAB fridge packs. Today there was a facing of TAB cut into the feature display (free standing sales display). Normanly TAB never gets a facing on those feature displays. The TAB was fresh as it had the new design. LOLOLOL

Has anyone noticed the Cherry Coke Zero replacing the regular Cherry Coke in displays?

At the supermarket a few days ago it was where regular Cherry Coke should be; yesterday at a gas station the Cherry Coke was gone and only CCZ and Black Cherry were available.

Are they running out of shelf space? ;)

David J.
02-03-2007, 06:39 PM
I think it's replacing other products in displays is because perhaps Coke really wants to push it. Now, I've yet to try it, but soon enough I will.

Tab is only in six packs here, and it barely sells.

David J.
02-06-2007, 03:43 PM
I think there's not a CF version because I think Coke doesn't want Coke Zero to cut into Diet Coke's sales. But, that's just me, not fact.

Coke doesn't know what they want to do with the Diet versions of their soda. :(

I used to enjoy a Coke Cherry (Cherry Coke LOL);for some reason maybe 5 or 6 years ago either I changed or Coke Cherry changed. I stopped drinking it as it just did not appeal to me.

Last Saturday, I came across some individual Cherry Coke (3/17/07) 12oz bottles. Yes it was Cherry Coke and NOT Coke Cherry Zero.

To my dismay, after I chilled them down, IMO Coke Cherry tasted just horrible. It could be my taste buds are "brain washed" by Pepsi?

Has the Coke Cherry formula been change recently? It tasted less cherry and less sweet as I remember to be moons ago.

David if you ever find yourself in lower Kentucky or parts of southern Missouri, stock up! smile.gif

I too think something's different about regular Cherry Coke. I used to drink it like mad when it was in the black and red cans with the squared off letters, but more recently the taste just doesn't do it for me. Maybe it was switching to Wild Cherry Pepsi and the Cherry RC?

When I open bottles of it now, it smells like cigarette smoke (?) Yuck.

I'm gonna try a CCZ just to taste it next time I see it for curiosities' sake.

Well I tried this tonight for the first time. Gotta admit it's not too bad. I think it tastes like Cherry Coke mixed with Diet Coke. It's got a lighter aftertaste than regular Cherry Coke. The can is cool too. I don't know if I can down alot of them in a row but I can see myself drinking a couple a day. I'm anti diet or any type of soda that's "good for you". Lol. But I gave it a try and I must say it's not bad. I noticed when regular Cherry Coke gets warm it gets too sweet in my opinion but this doesn't seem to do that. I give it a 8 on a scale of 1-10.8 because I think it has a diet taste sort of. But hey I reccomend it to anyone that wants to try something new.

fwiw, my girlfriend has gone from drinking one diet cherry coke a week to drinking one cherry coke zero a day.

She'd drink it more often but she doesn't need the caffeine.

Note that cherry coke zero is the only soda she drinks. If there were many people like her around drinking more soda Coke could see a significant upsurge in sales from the new coke zero lines.

And about Coca-Cola Zero is doing really well here in Mexico! When I went to Wal-Mart last friday, the shelf of 1 liter bottles of Coke Zero was almost empty, and yesterday a C-Store run out of 600 ml bottles of Coke Zero... also the Coke bottler here in Ags. placed a lot of Coke Zero billboards... probably they don't want the same results that Coca-Cola Vanilla and Coca-Cola Citra had...

Come to think of it, I do remember that the last time I had a bottle of Cherry Coke (which was a while ago), it wasn't that satisfying. Maybe the reason why Cherry Coke Zero tastes so watered-down to me is because I'm expecting it to taste like the old Cherry Coke formula.

That said, I still have fountain Cherry Coke pretty often, and it always hits the spot.

Just my on goofy thought.
(Venting to follow.)

It burns me that the Big Three seem to "tweak" good soda pops instead of letting them flourish on their own. Coke Cherry appears to be one example that a few of us board mates seem to think has change the flavoring. Another example has been diet 7up changing back to it's previous formula.

Why can't a sugar soda pop be sweet, syrupy and abundant in flavor? Lately the new sugar pops at least for my taste buds seem " hesitant" to take the sweetness close to the edge. My guess is that the soda pop companies are fearful of loosing market share to the younger health conscious consumers. My guess is that they do not want to push the envelope so as to keep both the sugar and diet categories competitive.

I may of made no sense. LOL Venting over and I will open a fresh Pepsi. LOL

Based on packaging and marketing, I think Coke is treating Diet Coke as a separate brand, and Coke Zero as an extension of the Coke brand.

Diet Cherry Coke is an extension of Diet Coke, and not Cherry Coke.

Cherry Coke Zero is and extension of Cherry Coke.

Coke Zero is an extension of Coke.

(Does that make sense?)

In other words, Coke Zero Cherry is marketed toward different people than Diet Cherry Coke..

To sum up, I don't think Diet Cherry Coke is going anywhere anytime soon.

"diet coke" has become its own brand (after all, it sells almost as much as pepsi).

and coca-cola zero is being treated as an extension of coke classic.

this probably has something to do with the fact that coke zero and coke classic have the same flavor formulas... and diet coke has its own (sweeter and similar to new coke & pepsi).

at this point, it's unclear what will happen to diet cherry coke. but i doubt they'll yank it right away (if it's been selling well).

Man this is gonna give Diet Dr. Pepper a run as my favorite diet. It is simply fantastic and while I like Coke Zero this is way better and with almost no aftertaste.

Also according to the CCE rep I spoke with Diet Coke with Cherry is on its way out and should be gone once supplies are exhausted. I think the reason is that Zero is more youth positioned and that is where the cherry cola market is strongest. CF is more of an adult/old people thing and so I see it staying with DC for the time being.

Coke is really in a great place in the diet market with two massive and growing brands. Pepsi will lose the #2 spot to Diet Coke soon and Zero will enter the top 10- that will be a major coup and I would say perhaps the end of the "cola wars". Obviously though other products (waters, citrus, lemon-lime, ect) will still be major battlegrounds.

I was able to find it at a local Walgreens here in Chicago. I'm not a big diet fan, though I thought Coke Zero was the lesser of the evils. As far as the cherry varient, I felt the flavor was extremely weak (http://forums.tannerworld.com/showthread.php?t=8483).

Weak cherry flavor...sort of agree...

You want a strong cherry flavor, you should try diet coke cherry marketed in the UK....there is hardly any taste of coke...it is much more like a cherry soda....which brings the question what will happen in the UK...will they continue with diet coke with cherry as it is called or switch to coke zero cherry?

In Maryland, we just discontinued Diet Cherry Coke in 12 packs, the last package we carried it in.
