I hear people talking about this stuff on here all the time, but I have never seen it. I hadn't even ever heard of it till I found this site a few months ago. I was just wondering what it is.

I think it is a Slurpee flavor. What flavor though? I don't know. Can someone help us out here?

I do remember reading that it was test-marketed somewhere.

It was test marketed in Chicago. I just talked to my Pepsi distributor tonight and mentioned that they should come out with a blue colored Mt. Dew. He said it bombed big time in Chicago.

You know I do seem to recall seeing 2 ltrs of MD Blue Shock. Even though it was deeply discounted I could not get myself to try it as it looked like window cleaner. Maybe if they had some in store samples I would have tried it.

Certain colors both food and drink I just can't deal with. It just my personal hang up. The color pink makes me freak. LOL

well what i heard is that there is problems with keeping blue soda blue... it seems to fade more then any other color.

Any way i have seen a picture of it...but never as a slurpee...the only slurpee blues around here are Fanta

Why is it that people hate blue sodas?

Mr Zabe

The only thing that comes to mind is that for us older farts, caugh medicine was once colored blue and purple (some times red). I remember getting a spoon full of blue crap (medicine) that coated my mouth so badly, I use to have a blue mouth all day long. Just a bad memory.

I also recall that for the longest time M & M candy did not use the color blue.

Now as for the 20 somethings on this board, I do not have a clue why blue drinks and foods are not accepted.

Personally, I'd love a blue soda or energy drink.
I was Pepsi Blue's biggest supporter.

Just my opinion....I think Pepsico is taking a well known and very popular drink and running its good name into the ground.
If I remeber correctly, Mt Dew has had 5 brand extensions in the last 5 years. Not including Diet MD and Caff Free Diet MD.
They wonder why Mt Dew sales go down when the launch an extensions while advertising to the same demographics. ????? Furthermore, they are clouding the Mt Dew brand by giving it all of these different names and flavors. What gives Pepesi? Am I missing something? Are you guys afraid to introduce a new soda and have it stand on its own 2 feet? Running out of ideas? ??????

Nick Laugher

it's got to be more than 5 doesn't it?

greg
12-19-2005, 05:38 PM
If you include all of the Slurpee flavors it would be well over 5.

Nick Laugher
12-19-2005, 08:45 PM
Even without them it has to be over five...

Code Red, LiveWire, Pitch Black, Pitch Black 2, Baja Blast, MDX, Mountain Dew Energy... there's probably more I can't think of.

Way too many extensions.

Nick Laugher

definitely way too many.

Although I pretty much loved Code Red.

greg

I agreewith Nick, Code Red was pretty good, I liked Live Wire also.
A code red slurpee was just the right thing on a hot summers day.

I forgot about the Amp and MDX.

Nick Laugher

Ahhh, AMP, keep forgetting that was a Dew product. Do they still make it? Or have MDX and Dew Energy replaced it?

If that wasn't the case, they wouldn't keep introducing them. If you're going to pick on Mtn Dew and extensions...let's not forget Coca-Cola! How many variations are there now? And how many Diet Coke variations? Way, way too many. None are new ideas...just a squeeze of some other flavor into the original...a sweetner change here and there.

Does anyone know where it would be possible to still find a bottle of blue shock from its test release. I consider myself a dew fanatic and would like to be able to pride myself on having had at least one of every flavor. blue shock is the only one I have yet to find......

Are people really unable to find Code Red? I can find it in every supermarket in the Philly area in 2 liters. I really don't care for it though. I like Livewire way better but I have only seen it pop up on occasion (and the grocery store that used to stock it went out if business)

I agree about the number of brand extensions. I think their relative failure over time has proven that they are really more short-term interest generators than actual long term winners. Coke and Pepsi have indeed done this increasingly with their cola brands and to much the same effect- if you look up a post of mine from awhile back I really let Pepsi have it for their multitude of cola xtensions (this was before Coke went insane with the concept as well- around the VC launch.).

I have always thought that Pepsi would be better off doing seasonal flavors instead of year round (which I know they already do). This might help with the fact that every extension starts off big (Code Red and Livewire come to mind) and then pretty much steadily decline into the corner of the shelf.

In the end I suppose a company has to weigh the short term cash and interest vs. the long-term value of the brand and I think it is no secret that Pepsi and Coke are both opting for the quick buck. Its interesting that few of the recent extensions from any company have done much to change their share- this is as true with Dew as it it with Coca-Cola-because they simply canabalize drinkers of the flagship product.

Personally, my favorite of the Mtn. Dew flavors is definately the "Baja Blast" brand that they sell exclusivly at Taco Bell fountains. Is there any chance that "Baja Blast" might actually be bottled or made more widely available sometime in the future. I think it would do well. It obviously must be popular since they've kept it at Taco Bell for a couple of years now. It's certainly my top choice as far as Mtn. Dew flavors go (and that includes the original flavor). I often drive through Taco Bell just for a large Baja Blast even if I'm not eating there.
