View Full Version : Road Trip! Detroit to Chicago
07-15-2007, 03:02 PM
Next weekend, the family is taking a roadtrip to Chicago from Detroit to see the Kwik E Mart and to sample some Chicago pizza and hot dogs. As far as soda goes, what should I expect and any places I should hit? Thanks in advance.
PS Who's got the best deep dish pizza?

Deep dish pizza, my all time favorite is Giordano's.
Every element/ingredient of their deep dish pizza is
awesome. The crust is baked yet tender, the cheese is soothing
and the sauce is pure A-List. IMO The locals eat this pie. LOL

Hot dogs....what part of the city will you visit? I will give you a few
of my favorites.:) Wofey's is awesome!!!!! Super Dog is very good (fat dogs
and super good shakes, cool drive in servce to your car).
Gene & Judes is good(bare bones, just dogs, fries and cokes. If you ask for
ketchup on your dog, they will chew you out and threaten to boot you out of the
shop). No kidding. LOL Portillo's ok (not old school. LOL) Some of these
joints have multiple locations.
Ask around, the locals can usually get you to the good joints.

If you are around this area of the city, this is well worth the effort to visit and have a few dogs.
This is the plant where Vienna meat products are made. This plant opens it's cafeteria to the public. They serve hog dogs, Corn beef sandwiches, ect. They have Coke and Pepsi fountain soda
pop. The best part is that you get to eat with the workers. LOL It's real cool. Oh yeah the prices are cheaper than the other joints. I really enjoy the whole experience of going there.

Goose Island is pretty good and you should be able to find it in most grocery stores. Clover Club Bottling Company (http://www.glassbottlesoda.org/bottlers/cloverclub.shtml) has a bunch of good flavors too. Some of the larger stores should carry some of their stuff.
Pizza? I like Gino's East (http://featuredfoods.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/a-store/gino_p2.shtml?L+scstore+cfyl1543ginosfff16df1+1184 619491) :D

We will be in the SW part of the city near the older airport. Any Coke or Pepsi products I can find in Chicago that I cannot find in Detroit?

Ok...You will be near Midway Airport.
I'm not very familiar with that area.
The White Castle right adjacent to the airport is good
and the grease will stay with you for hours. LOL
You might come across a Harold's Chicken joint.
Warning the hot sauce is killer. LOL The chicken and
ribs are good.
You might find a few CS/American Beverage brands on the south side.
I'm just not sure. Chicago appears to be a bread and butter
Big Three soda pop city.
Brain freeze. LOL
While you in the City,go to Jewel Foods. It's the largest chain food store in the
Chicago area. Jewel brand soda pop/MAX ( 3 X 4) 12pks are pretty good and very cheap
at around $2. Most stores have a .25 cent pop machine so you can sample the flavors.
I think the Black Cherry,Cherry Cola,Fruit Punch and Grape are quite good. They have sugar
as the fourth ingredient. I really dig the Cherry Cola. Check for the date on the side of the

It is in a really trendy area.
THe best polishes and hotdog's with fries and their trimmings come from Jimmy's hotdogs on the corner of Grand & Pulaski.
