Lohan Does Playboy ... Sorta

Playboy has a new energy drink ... and so far, celebrity hotspots are the only places you're gonna get a taste. For now, you can just look at the pictures and fantasize.

The magazine's new "Black Label" beverage has only been rolled out at a few outlets this summer, including Jeff Beacher's Madhouse presented by 944 Magazine at The Hard Rock in Vegas, and the Polaroid Beach House in Malibu -- which hosted a 4th of July party attended by Lindsay Lohan.

The drink, which not yet in stores, is only available only in chest markets.

Playboy stock and the company in general has not been performing well because its not really crispy as they say. Its kind of stale and old. There is nothing fresh cool or new about checking out 18 year old girls in a magazine run by a 82 year old. A magazine that has changed little in 50 years and seems to be stuck in the 80's. What guy wants to proudly walk around in a Playboy shirt? For that matter what girl with any class??? What does the brand say to you in 2007?

First i am not a share holder and i don't know about playboys portfolio, but i must say HUGH HEFNER IS AN ICON and anything associated with the man and his product sells...i don't know if its selling the way it did in the past but one must think IF PLAYBOY MARKETS THIS DRINK CORRECTLY they can be very effective in the market place and there is no doubt about that !! Every 18 - 20 - 30 something is going to AT FIRST try the drink out , it remains to be seen if the energy drink consumer will keep coming back for more !!! Oh by the way you do a survey right now and in and of the bracket that i proposed (18-30 somethings) i can assure you that we(including myself) all have something Playboy including T-SHIRTS , SPC the Vintage look is in bars, lounges, clubs and just dressing casual look around and ask anybody & everybody you know including young-older females they all have a playboy catalog somewhere !!
What it all boils down to is every guy would like to be HUGH HEFNER & every girl would one day like to be a playmate and if PLAYBOY CONVEYS THAT MESSAGE THROUGH THERE MARKETING CAMPAIGN WITH THERE ENERGY DRINK we will see big numbers $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and even a larger extension on the famous GROTTO & MANSION !!!

All I can say is.... I disagree. Over the last 5 years Girls Gone Wild has made more money than Playboy!!! If it is to appeal to 18-30 than why is a 50 year old and 82 year old running the magazine? Playboy has lost its identity and the brand has suffered over the last 20 years. Maxim sells more magazines than Playboy ever did and their dips into porn have been a disaster. There is no doubt Playboy blazed the way for all others but along the way hipper magazines, Porn going mainstream and the internet has blurred the vision of the once mighty Playboy. I am afraid the people guiding the ship are a bit out of touch with the market place and their brand.

By the way answer this... what would you think of a young 18 year old girl wearing a Maxim shirt...? Now what would you think if she was wearing a Playboy shirt...?

Once again.....I have my opinion and you have yours, thats what makes this country so great !! As far as the comparison between Playboy and Girls Gone Wild and Maxim and there fair share of the younger(18-30) demographic and the history of there $$$$ in the overall market place - I have no idea !! i am not about to do the research ? I have to bake " Italian bread in about 15 minutes for friends and family for a feast " !!! YOUR INVITED SPC !! HAHAHA !! all joking aside !! All i can say is i have no problem with an 18 year old girl wearing a PLAYBOY T-SHIRT versus MAXIM and i don't forcast her getting hit with tomatoes from her friends because it's out of style !! but i don't want to get off of the subject of the post - and that is the " branding of the new Playboy energy drink and what does everybody think about it ...... NOW !! " Do you think Playboy energy drink will survive in this OVER-SATURATED SEGMENT ? I am curious what our Intelligent board members have to say ?

Really the magazine might of lost its edge but the the brand is still there. The bunny logo still appeals to a lot of folks. I think with the design of the can it might do ok. I think it will do better than the Jeff Gordon drink. I think those that are drawn to the Playboy logo are more likely to drinks energy drinks than your Jeff Gordon fans. It will all come down to if they market it right. I mean marketing is it really. Otherwise how do you explain the popularity of Monster lol?

How many kids (boys and girls) have read or read (look at the pictures) their parents Playboy Mags? My point is that Playboy reaches ages far more than older men. I'm willing to place money that 90 out of a 100 guys and girls ages 16 to 25, know who Hugh Hefner is and the name of his three girl friends. Now that's brand identity even if my number is off a bit, that's still a very strong potential market (print add and hip hop pop culture).

It's not just the magazine it's the brand. The logo is familiar and acceptable to young people. You see it on shirts, clothing, cell phones ect all the time and that is not on 50 yr old guys either. They might not have ever really read the magazine but they know it stands for cool. Ever see photos from a Playboy party. All celebs including young ones are there. Everyone wants to be there. I mean come on if your beverage can sell with it's name then why can't the Playboy one sell?

Just another attempt to cross promote a brand. Von Dutch, OCC, Hooters, Jeff Gordon, Steven Segal, ond so on and so on....zzzzzzz. The only sucessful energy brands are those who have created their own "stamp" on the business.

This has also been tried in other beverage categories. Remember Life Savers sodas and Crayola fruit drinks? A great brand in clothes or motorcycles does not translate to great brands in beverages.

Very well said Boodoo .... guys the brand is not that cool and as iconic as he is he is still 82 years old and walking around with 22 year old blondes...its not cool its a bit silly. The company has been performing poorly and will be sold soon after Hef dies and will be taken private. A 21 year old guy walking around with a Playboy energy drink is not cool... he is desperate.

Soon to come... Girls Gone Wild Energy Drink! Make your girl go wild with Girls Gone Wild ED !!!!

Man.... I am good! ;-)

IMO... About 4 years too late...The Bunny brand is now out of style among the younger ladies and the boys are looking at trash porn for the real action shots and I have to some what agree with SCP, HH is way old although he still does have one of the most collected monkey magazine it is not the hottest thing like it was 6 / 8 years ago.

But good luck PB, I can see a place in on-premise for this brand but not c-store...
