View Full Version : Pepsi News: Amp expansion and Slice to Return

01-29-2008, 07:02 PM
Speaking with a Pepsi Rep from Rolling Meadows yesterday and he told me this spring Amp will expand its line with grape and orange, and Slice will attempt yet another return, although it dosent sound as if it will replace Tropicana Twisters.

From my experience.....and this is only anecdotal, Slice did very well in Hispanic neighborhoods. The Pineapple flavor was always a huge hit as well as the Strawberry. Perhaps PEPSI is seeing the future and marketing to certain demographics with the relaunch.

i think the tropicana tastes like baby aspirin. maybe that's why they're re-releasing orange slice.

In addition to grape and orange, I heard Amp will be coming out with a berry flavor. Regarding Slice returning - is this anything more substantial than the rumor last July under the thread Diet Tropicana Twister (http://www.bevnet.com/bevboard/bevboard-general/31174-diet-tropicana-twister.html)?

The Amp part of the story is definitely true, the first two flavors are coming in March and the others to follow. They will be pushing Amp hard now with Dale Jr. As for the Slice, I have no idea-We don't sell Trop Twister here, they dropped it for Crush.

01-30-2008, 07:16 PM
i really hope this is true, and hopefully dr. slice will come back definitely one of my favorite sodas

01-30-2008, 07:35 PM
AMP also has 8 pack "Race Packs" now - I saw them in Wal-Mart today.

01-30-2008, 07:36 PM
I doubt we'll see Dr. Slice return - I don't think it was that big of a seller, and some of the bottlers that had it now carry Cheerwine.

Probably just orange and grape, maybe strawberry.

01-31-2008, 07:38 PM
slice is a no go but new amp flavors oh yeah..citrus amp(shrug) and 8 pack amps as well as 12 pack amps in some bulk chains(bjs, cosco..etc etc) and the iced coffes from starbucks getting makeovers and a brand new csd not even my boss has heard specifics on yet..

The Tropicana name is very popular. Why would Pepsi want to re introduce slice...a brand that was never really popular. There is really no point in having Tropicana Twister AND slice competing.

This was the same when Fanta and Minute Maid were sold along side each other and it never made sense because they were both from the same company.

As I have said before.
At least in the Chicago Market,Slice
was a good seller. IMO Slice was good tasting,
a good brand presence on the shelve, sold like crazy
(2 ltrs) when on the weekly hot sales and the flavors
were appealing to the mass market.

I enjoyed Lemon Lime and Orange. I was a loyal
Slice customer.

Fruit Works was so much better ..hahaha..

02-03-2008, 02:09 AM
I have a feeling their not gonna do so well, It would be awesome if they came out with a baja blast amp.

02-04-2008, 01:46 AM
Talked again with the Pepsi Rep, and he told me more info about Slice. He said that it will be called Slice Undercover Ltd. It will be clear and be sold in 20. oz, 2 lt, and 12 pk. cases. I don't quite understand what they are trying to do here. I will also try to find out what the flavor will be, and I will get pics when I can

02-04-2008, 03:50 AM
Sounds like it might be some kind of "mystery flavor".

02-04-2008, 04:35 PM
Yeah, speaking of medicinal taste similarities, the grape one sorta tastes like Dimetapp the cough syrup.

I'm in southern Louisiana for a few days, and I have seen Slice peach, strawberry, grape, orange, diet orange in 12pks and 2L's at Rouse's supermarkets in Houma. Also saw Slice vending machines (not new ones) at several Rouse's. The product came from the PepsiAmericas plant in Reserve LA.
As far as I know, both Collierville and Reserve have continued to produce Slice (in the 4 flavors and 1 diet) even after Twisters was introduced.

Adding to the Amp orange/grape rumors, on December 19, 2007, Pepsi filed to protect the trademark of Amp Energy Elevate (http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&entry=77355543), with the associated logo in black/white:

http://www.bevreview.com/wp-content/image_ampenergyelevate1.gif (http://www.bevreview.com/2008/02/06/rumor-grape-amp-orange-amp/)

Not sure if that factors into this discussion, but take it for what it is.

And as far as the Slice rumors, just a few days before the above filing, on December 4, Pepsi made two other filings: Sierra Mist Undercover Orange (http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&entry=77343594) and Sierra Mist Free Undercover Orange (http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&entry=77343610). One must assume these are for orange-flavored drinks, based on the color logos:

Thanks to Trademork (http://www.trademork.com/) for the tips. :)

Anything else on an Amp berry?

03-05-2008, 06:30 AM
Elevate, Relaunch, and Traction were three names I saw for the new flavors. I also found trademarks for those three as well as firestorm.

The 3 new Amps are heading into our market tomorrow, It IS Sierra Undercover Orange and Sierra Free Undercover Orange, look for it when the new "Get Smart" film comes out. Sierra Mist with a light orange taste, tastes pretty good and I'm not an orange soda fan.

03-06-2008, 02:18 AM
ahh interesting tie in..what market are you in?

03-07-2008, 12:41 AM
I saw the new AMP drinks today @ 7-11. I didnt pick up any maybe some other time:)

03-07-2008, 02:53 AM
Undercover Orange sounds good. But what about Mojito Splash? Is that still coming?

03-07-2008, 11:55 PM
Undercover Orange sounds good. But what about Mojito Splash? Is that still coming?I've heard that it might not be coming until fall or maybe even next summer.

I loved Slice!!!

03-28-2008, 04:24 PM
A forum member over at Salute to Soda (http://www.salutetosoda.com/viewtopic.php?t=2038) posted the following image that they received as part of a "Pepsi Stuff" promotional e-mail:

http://www.bevreview.com/wp-content/image_sierramistfreeundercoverorange2.jpg (http://www.bevreview.com/2008/03/28/coming-soon-sierra-mist-undercover-orange-sierra-mist-free-undercover-orange/)

It would seem that this further supports the future appearance of this drink flavor.

And is it just me, or does that beverage appear clear? Perhaps the whole "undercover" banter is the idea of a hidden orange flavor in a drink that doesn't look like it... playing off Drink Slinger's note of a Get Smart film tie-in... you know, spy stuff!

03-28-2008, 07:34 PM
Clever..but I don't like the whole "clear" thing ..meh just kinda boring if you ask me.

03-28-2008, 08:32 PM
Sounds like a neat idea to me, but of course what will matter most is the taste.

By the way, I just noticed a resurgence of Cranberry Splash in some stores around here. Is it back for good?

03-29-2008, 02:33 PM
I got the sam e-mail and heres what it says: " Introducing NEW Sierra Mist Undercover Orange, a clear lemon-lime soda with a splash of mandarin orange flavor. Available for a limited time only."

03-30-2008, 10:37 PM
Well I saw the new amps in a C-store yesterday and bought one..the blue one and it was very good.

03-31-2008, 09:07 PM
Saw all three new flavors, Orange Citrus RELAUNCH, Mixed Berry ELEVATE and Grape TRACTION in my local exxon in Cambridge, Maryland.

Picked up the Orange one and it's very good, it's alot like Livewire and I'm a fan of that.

As for Slice, I think it's around in select places but not here. I miss it, i won't drink the tropicana twister.

04-08-2008, 02:16 PM
I finally got a chance to try one of the new Amp extensions last Saturday. I bought all three, but decided I would try the orange flavored RELAUNCH one first. I'm a bit partial, since Livewire is one of my favorite drinks, but I thought this was an outstanding addition all in all. It tasted almost exactly like Livewire, with the exception that it didn't have the same overpowering sweetness that Livewire does (which was good), and there was only a mild hint of "energy drink" flavor as an aftertaste. It actually left me thinking how far energy drinks have come since they first appeared, in that I actually felt like I was chugging medicine with the first few drinks I had, and now the drinks seem to go down almost as smooth as regular sodas. I will definitely buy this one again!

04-08-2008, 03:33 PM
I wish they came ina sugar free version

04-08-2008, 10:28 PM
I am sure they will if they become popular enough..see for reference regular AMP..No Fear and Adrenaline rush.

Is Slice available at Walmart?

If so...

Does your local Walmart carry it?
