I came across the following while poking around USPTO the other day (http://www.bevreview.com/2009/04/22/speculation-diet-mtn-dew-white-flash-diet-mtn-dew-ultra-violet/):

http://www.bevreview.com/wp-content/image_dietmountaindew_ultraviolet_whiteflash1.gif (http://www.bevreview.com/2009/04/22/speculation-diet-mtn-dew-white-flash-diet-mtn-dew-ultra-violet/)

We've all seen stuff like this before, but what caught my eye was the recent activity:

Diet Mtn Dew White Flash
Filing Date: December 2, 2008
Published for Opposition: February 24, 2009

Diet Mtn Dew Ultra Violet
Filing Date: December 2, 2008
Published for Opposition: March 3, 2009

Anyone know anything about these titles?

yeah. those are interesting names. i'm surprised they're applied to "diet" though. does Mtn Dew usually make diet versions of it's flavor extensions?

Diet Code Red is the only one currently available. The only thing I can think of is the Pepsi saw the growth in the Diet Mountain Dew brand and perhaps they are targeting that a bit more directly with some special Diet flavors. Other than that, no clue.

good point. diet mtn dew has been in the top ten soda list for a couple years now. makes sense they'd invest in it.

The folks at the 'mothership' BevNet picked up the Diet Dew story and did a little more exploring on trademarks (http://www.bevnet.com/news/2009/4-27-2009-coca-cola_pepsi_trademarks)

Actually seen something from a certain large drug store chain (that will remain nameless since it was C onfidential info and i do not need to V i S it the boss about it)
that was sending back their authorization letters for it to be in all stores. I could not tell you a time frame exactly but the paperwork had all of the upcoming ad activity thru halloween. I would think that this could be a signal that it will be soon, I may be wrong, who knows, I am just a poor dumb pop man.

I'm pretty sure Ultra Violet will hit shelves late this summer. I think the Pepsi folks are finally starting to see some untapped potential in this growing diet brand. I'm curious as to the flavor profile on this one.

Day 1 of period 9 is what they are telling us. Monday is d11p8 (sat and sun do not count of 20 day period) so that means that aug 10 will be "official" release day for us, but the bossman will want extra 20 oz numbers to hit P8 so I am sure we will roll early probably sometime week of Aug 3rd when it gets to warehouse.

Found it in 20 oz bottles and fridge packs at the Super Walmart in Walpole, MA. Flavor's hard to pin down, it's somewhat light and pleasant, it's got a bit of that Skittle-y flavor of some of the Sprite Remixes, but the grape Kool-Aid comparison isn't inaccurate either. Too early to say for me if it's a winner, but I'm certainly not put off by it. Got 12 cans to figure that out, heheh.

Though I'd kill for a diet version of Voltage, this doesn't seem like a bad offering either!

So was White Flash just an alternate name for Ultra Violet or should we expect another Diet Dew flavor.

mjb1124
08-09-2009, 01:37 AM
I think White Flash was another flavor that was tested alongside Ultra Violet. Perhaps it didn't test as well, or maybe they're saving it for a later date.

Oddly, I've seen 50% off coupons for 20 oz. bottles of Ultra Violet at several C-stores, but I haven't actually seen the bottles. I did, however, find 12-packs at Wal-Mart. I feel like these Dew flavors are starting to blend into each other - this tastes like some combination of Pitch Black, Revolution, Voltage, and Alliance Blue Game Fuel. But hey, I liked all those flavors, and it's good to have a diet alternative. And it doesn't taste "diety" as others have noted.

Would you believe that I started this thread all the way back in April based on a trademark search? How far we've come :)

I was able to track down some Ultra Violet today (by the way, what's the official spelling? Pepsi's press release spells it as one word -- UltraViolet -- but all their other materials break it into two words).

Insert traditional "beverage next to a tree photo here":

http://www.bevreview.com/wp-content/image_dietmountaindewultraviolet_review1.jpg (http://www.bevreview.com/2009/08/10/diet-mtn-dew-ultra-violet-mountain-dew-ultraviolet/)

Anyway, my thoughts (http://www.bevreview.com/2009/08/10/diet-mtn-dew-ultra-violet-mountain-dew-ultraviolet/)... This isn't too bad. Yes, it's diet, thus you'll get the aftertaste, but it's a tolerable diet. To me, it tasted a lot like Revolution... anyone else get that impression? The berry flavor was not as strong as you'd find in Voltage, but more subtle... very generic and unidentifiable.

It would seem to be a nice expansion for the Diet Dew line, but that's gonna be based on some decent marketing. With only 10 weeks, and given Pepsi's inability to market pretty much anything well these days, I'm skeptical... though I'd like to see it succeed.

Had one today. Despite the aspartame/ace-k blend, it tasted very diet-y. Like a fizzy version of mixed berry Aquafina Flavorsplash.

I was rather disappointed. Pepsico should just give us diet Voltage and Livewire already, instead of *****footing around with things like this.

Diet Livewire did exist, in 2004. Apparently only in parts of Indiana, Illinois and Kansas.

yuck. i should've known better, i don't do diet. tastes similar to revolution, a little more fruity, but with that trademark diet taste. now i have to figure out what to do with 11 cans. for those in the triad region of NC, i've seen 12 packs, but no 2 ltrs. or 20 oz's. i wish they had 20 oz's here, could've saved some space and money.

and on a sidenote, the target on hanes mall blvd, had about two dozen 12 packs of pepsi throwback on display. i thought those were gone.

The squeaky wheel gets the Dew. Right after my whining post, I found it at a different Waldbaum's.

It does have more of a diet edge than regular Diet Dew, but I'm still really liking it. I wish it was a bit more grape-y, but it's a very nice change of pace, especially for diet Dew drinkers who don't have many options (especially since they stopped carrying Diet Code Red on Long Island about three years ago).

Not a company comment by any means but I think that this will be something that comes back pretty quick as a PLE. I know it sold like crazy around here, then again it may never be back and we may get a few more flavors of game fuel and/or sierra mist to sit and watch the dust collect on as they creep towards their death code dates.
