View Full Version : Citrus Soda Thread(MY, MD, SD)

Since we are talking about all three in different threads, I figured it would be nice to have one thread.

Sun Drop is getting a major push now. Lots of props and "intro" price stands.

It is now available in 12 packs both diet and regular, 2 liters, 20 oz in both diet and regular.

On the flip side, MY is available in SOME places...and there is no push behind it.(yet I am assuming)
Where it is sold, there are no props, or special prices.

I like all of them but Mountain Dew will always be #1 for me.

Vault comes in second, then Mello Yello, then Sun Drop. I love to drink all of them though.

I think what you mean is point of sale (or pos), not props.

Sundrop availability is increasing here, but still spotty. A lot of people online are unhappy about the fact that it tastes different than the stuff they remember from Coke or Choice USA in North Carolina.

Mello Yello is everywhere, mostly in 20oz and 12 packs. 2L here and there. Some promotion, but not a lot.

Dew isn't doing anything aggressive to combat either of these (pricing, promotions, etc), like they did when Vault came out.

I'd drink more Sundrop if we had the real stuff, even moreso if we had cherry lemon. I don't drink a lot of citrus sodas in general, myself.

See thats the weird thing, where I am at, you would be hard pressed to find mello yellow in more than just one package and definately not in the coolers... yet sundrop is in every store, every package, and most often a display around the corner too... not really sure about the taste, but everything i drink today is different than 10 years ago, from switching to plastic/cans from glass bottles... to using corn syrup instead of sugar...

P.S. how about squirt in this category?

fusion
02-04-2011, 07:14 PM
The taste is a lot weaker than what I remember. Comparing the ingredients and the nutritional information, it has fewer calories and less sugars, and natural flavor has been replaced with natural flavors, and it is 2 entries lower on the ingredients list. Someone even posted pics on their facebook. SunDrop | Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/SunDrop)

Squirt is indeed citrus, but it's grapefruit, and the others are orange juice based. I can't buy Squirt around here, but if I go a little bit to the south, Pepsi Bottling Ventures carries it. Coke has Fanta Toranja/Citrus to compete with it, and they rolled it out in areas where they used to have Squirt (mainly in CA and MI). It's basically the same soda as Citra, which was later renamed Fanta Citrus. Coke sold a lot of Squirt where they had it, so they are really pushing Fanta to replace those sales. Should be in a lot of packaging options by this summer in those areas. I just wish they would take some of the smaller flavors nationwide, all I can get anywhere near here is the big 4. You have to get a frozen drink (Slurpee or something similar) to get any interesting flavors. I've also seen Fanta Birch Beer in fountains, I'd love to have that in cans and bottles (Philadelphia area is a big birch beer market).

If you want to taste real Sun Drop, you need to get some of the glass-bottled stuff from West Jefferson. It's made with real sugar. Unfortunately, you can't buy it directly from WJ because Coke has the distribution rights to Sun Drop in that area. Sun Drop of Concord (NC), however, does sell this (as well as Diet Sun Drop in glass bottles and all of the Sun Drop varieties from Choice).

As for the other citrus drinks, Mello Yello never went away in the NC Piedmont. I'm looking forward to trying the MY Zero. Vault seems to be vanishing around here. Mountain Dew (and most of it's extensions) are available almost everywhere.

If only Ski were more widely available....

I had never tried the "other" stuff, just this one. I freakin' love it. I am perplexed at the fact that Diet Sundrop lists "salt" as an ingredient. Never saw that before.

I now have MY, MDLW, and SD in my fridge's bottom drawers. So yummy. My top Drawers is diet MD, Diet SD, Diet Crush, and Space reserved for MY Zero. Which I am highly anticipating after trying Sprite Zero Which was very good. It has to be a Coke thing.

Looks like Sun Drop is selling well so far. MY is just now being put in everywhere, so the jury is still out on them.

With Pitch black and the new Diet Dews coming soon enough...looks like this is going to be an awesome summer for citrus soda. All that we need now is flavor extensions of MY and SD.

BTW....anyone know why they put so much more salt in Diet SD versus regular SD?

Probably to adjust the pH. Citrus sodas are made with orange juice concentrate, so they have more organic acids in them. Adding sodium helps keep those acids in solution. Some artificial sweeteners also have to be in the salt form in order to dissolve (acesulfame-K, for example).

Found the new Diet Dews today. I tried the Diet Voltage and thought it was very good, the best new diet soda I've had in a while. (Possibly since the last Diet Dew offering, Ultra Violet.) Admittedly I haven't had a regular Voltage in a while, so I can't really vouch for how close it is, but the raspberry pucker was very familiar, and it was refreshing and not too "diety".

Haven't tried Diet Supernova yet, but it will be hard for it to live up to Diet Voltage, especially considering that I didn't like regular Supernova much.

The only places I've found them are at Rutgers University's convenience stores (which are operated by Barnes & Noble). Haven't seen them anywhere else, even at the usual places I can depend on for the latest flavors. Maybe they're really targeting the college audience with this one.

I did try Diet Supernova today. My initial impression was surprisingly not bad, but then after a few more sips, the syrupy sweetness I remembered from the original hit me. So yeah, Diet Voltage gets my vote.

3. Typhoon
4. Code Red
5. Baja Blast
6. Whiteout

If only Ski were more widely available....

Ski had just (re-)entered this area last Summer. With the push that Sun Drop is getting, along with the fact that it goes on special whenever RC/Dr. Pepper products do, I am concerned that Ski will not sell well. When SD is on special, a 12-pack of cans is nearly 1/2 of what a 12-pack of Ski is.

I like them both, so I would like to keep them both around.

I have been an on and off drinker of MD for almost 30 years or so.
Sun Drop, after drinking two 20oz bottles, has totally blown me away.
Great taste, great carbonation and a strong caffeine kick make for a very
satisfying soda pop. (No, I do not work for the SD brand. LOL)

I tried SunDrop today for the first time, bought a plastic bottle at the gas station. After trying 3 sips, I just found it way too sweet and the aftertaste was like Pine-Sol. Just too syrupy sweet for me.

Also tried Citrus Blast for the first time, and I'm really liking it, despite having HFCS.

SodaFan16

I take back what I said about Supernova's after taste, I drank it again and it was even better than the first time I drank it. I guess you need to drink it a couple of times before making a decision. :)

mjb1124
03-23-2011, 03:50 PM
My second impression of Diet Supernova was also more favorable. I wouldn't mind too much if it sticks around. However, it still pales in comparison to Diet Voltage which has quickly become my favorite diet soda.

I'm pretty surprised that Supernova is winning so far. I don't work for Pepsi and don't have any statistics, but based on my observations, Diet Voltage seems to be a faster seller around here. At one convenience store on campus, they've depleted about 2/3 of their Diet Voltage stock, while Supernova seems to be just sitting there. Maybe they'll end up keeping both around if there's a significant discrepancy between sales and voting.

I'm still holding out hope. They could keep the existing label design for Diet Supernova and just add "The Winner" to it, while changing Diet Voltage's label to align it with regular Voltage.

i work for pepsi all of the production facilities that have soda lines are making pitch black but supernova is produced at very few facilities so only so many pallets are sent to the hubs(smaller distrabution facilities). i am talking about 12 packs.

Damnit. What stores usually get them? Because there's absolutely no Pitch Black or Supernova at Jewel, Walgreens, Target, CVS, Butera in 12 packs.

Around here, they don't bother with either. The distribution of these products have been non-existent so far.

I am confused as to why pepsi doesn't force their hand. They claim that this was a big nationwide thing, then don't bother to distribute it accordingly.

I didn't realize MD Supernova and Pitch Black were out until I saw them in 20 oz bottles at a random gas station last Saturday at Point Reyes Station in Northern Cal. I bought the Supernova one ($1.68 incl. tax and CRV) and it is pretty good like I remembered a couple of years back. I'll have to be on the lookout for these MDs as I've yet to see them anywhere else in CA.

I've never tried Surge, Kick, or Jolt before. :(

Isn't Jolt an energy drink?

I have Rockstar Citrus and NOS Charged Citrus in the fridge to try out.

Jolt was a cola brand. It was released in 1986. In or around 1994 they released flavor extensions like Orange, Citrus, Cherry, a white grape one(never had it), Blue one, and a red one. I really liked the Orange and Citrus ones. But didn't drink the Orange one much because of Slice, and the Caffeine. I generally like my Orange pop caffeine free...unless it is mountain dew.

Here is another fans take: http://www.bevnet.com/bevboard/beverage-reviews/29018-my-reviews-every-jolt-flavor.html

I really wish Jolt would had made it. What you see today is NOT Jolt.

As for Kick, it was the MD knock-off from the Rc-Cola company...back when they still existed in the US. When they were scooped up by what is now DP/Snapple...Kick was given the boot(pun intended). It was solid. I liked it a few ticks more than Vault...and Surge was just plain nasty. That stuff was different in so many ways(like the fact that it had no orange juice)...and frankly, I really hated it.

In addition to Kick, the old Royal Crown Cola Company also had a citrus drink called "Lift." It was similar to Kick, but it had no caffeine.

Another really good citrus drink is Ski -- if you can find it.

Ski is regional. As for Lift...apparently that is the name of a Coke product sold in Australia.

Coca-Cola does have a line of drinks called "Lift" in Australia, but "Lift Golden Citrus Cola" was a Royal Crown product. (See my avatar.) There was also a lemon-lime soda called "Lift" in the 1940s.

I found Pepsi's Diet Citrus Blast while visiting Albemarle, NC recently. The 12-pack was on sale for $2.50, so I decided to buy one. Grapefruit flavored citrus sodas are not my favorites, but this one doesn't have an overwhelming grapefruit taste (like Squirt). It's okay, just a bit bland.

More news on Mountain Dew Game Fuel's return. It promotes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and will feature the original citrus cherry flavor and a new Game Fuel. The new flavor is a dark green color, and is described as "tropical Dew". It is believed to be the infamous mystery flavor that select Dew Labs members got to try. Both flavors will be released in early November this year.

Really? Then why don't they just put Baja Blast in cans? It tastes great and would definitely be a good seller.

In fact, why don't they just keep producing all flavors of MD and not make anything limited eddition? Can't they get more money if they do that..

It's a win/win for Pepsi and TB. Research showed that a large percentage of people were getting food without drinks, so they came up with an exclusive flavor you could only get there. And that increased beverage sales.

If it's dark green, it's not Baja Blast. That is a very light green. Almost aqua.

Back when it first came out, it was supposed to be an LTO, the first in a series of TB exclusive Dews. But that never came to fruition. My guess is that Baja Blast did so well, they didn't want to mess with it.

Also, and this seems kind of odd, but samples of Baja Blast were sent out, in the plain aluminum cans.

It makes a lot of sense that they stopped...but having an LTO flavor would had been rather neat.(not as neat as a 100 flavor machine mind you)

Seems like some Citrus type drinks don't always last in NYC. Mello Yello seems to have disappeared from many NYC stores. I was in Morehead City, NC over the weekend. The situation with citrus drinks is rather odd there. The local Coca-Cola distributor has the rights to Sun-Drop there, but they're also heavily promoting Mello Yello. It seemed strange to see Mello Yello, MY Zero, Sun-Drop, and Diet Sun-Drop all sitting side-by-side on the store shelves. Also, I saw all of the different Mountain Dew extensions there. The distributor for Cheerwine & the DPSG drinks doesn't have a citrus soda in that market area.
