Mello Yello has strongholds in the fallowing states NC,SC,TN,AL,and GA. So I am wondering - Why is Vault being tested in 4 of these five states? Wouldn't it make more sense for Coke to try Vault in a state that doesn't have much Mello Yello (like PA). Or is Coke trying to slowly convert Mello Yello fans into Vault fans? I don't understand why Coke has them fighting each other.

Vault's now out in 1Liters from plant FL - Flint, Michigan. it's the normal green swirl bottle, not the special Vault bottle.

Coke has serious plans to replace MY with Vault, that's why they're testing it in those states.

Although, I know nothing of sales figures, so I have no clue whether people are preferring Vault.

I doubt that Mello Yello will ever completely go away. It's known as such a classic brand. Vault will probably replace it in areas where MY isn't so entrenched, but those southeast areas will most likely keep it.
