I just finished a glass bottle of Mexican Coke! Wow, it was quite good, but it didn't taste quite the same as the American made Kosher Coke. Can anyone tell me what might be different? It's been a while since I had the Kosher Coke, so I can't really compare the two. Also, I know Jungle Jim's (a local HUGE international food store) carries Coke from a few different countries. Would there be any differences there between those kinds?

For that matter, I've been contemplating having a fountain, and I'm curious if it would be possible to acquire syrup from other countries as well. I figure it is possible in some way or another, but it might get fairly expensive.

I've heard German Coke doesn't taste quite as good as American or Mexican.

As far as Kosher v. Mexican, there may be formula differences, but I personally think the big difference is the packaging. You have to get a higher carbonation level with plastic, since you lose it due to the gas leaking through the plastic. With glass, you won't have that problem.

I had 600 mL plastic bottle Coke from New Zealand and that was REALLY good too.

I did not care for the Dutch Coke when I tried it in a can, they also use vegetable oil or something too in it.

Mexican Coke is good but it is in glass so that has alot to do with it, the 500mL glass bottles of Coke from Mexico taste different from the smaller glass bottles.

Try Coke from Holland. They make it there with the old, old recipe. The recipe they started using after getting rid of cocaine. It's much better than any other Coke i've tried.

Okay, I just hit the store earlier today and I picked up a variety of things to try. In my stash is:

Mexican Coke
Mexican Sprite
Afri-Cola
Hires Root Beer

They also had stickers for Mexican Pepsi and French Coke, but they were out of those. I dropped a note in their suggestion box about Dublin Dr. Pepper, and I figure they probably will start stocking that in the near future! I need to give that a try, as other than my finding the Sprite, the only mainstream sugary drinks they had were Colas.

After trying a Dutch Coke, I definitely noticed a difference from the Mexican, and wow it was delicious, but sadly the Dutch is only about 7 oz vs the Mexican at about 12. The price is actually a bit more at $1.29 vs $1.09 for Mexican (at a local liquor store!). Those are the only sizes I've found here so far.

HOWEVER, I inspected the bottle labels and found something interesting

Mexican (slapped on label) - Carbonated Water, HFCS and/or Sucrose, Carmel Color, Phosphoric Acid, Natural Flavor, Caffeine

Dutch (translated) - sparkling water, sugar, Sulphite ammonia caramel (caramel coloring), phosphoric acid, "plant extract", caffeine

They look awefully close if not identical to me, and what I would suspect as they did taste differently, is that water quality plays a big part in the final taste of the soda. The Dutch tasted a bit more purified, and maybe just a bit crisper. What would be interesting would be to put syrups from both countries on the same fountain and see what they taste like then! I spent $11 for an eight pack of French Coke and it really had a weird taste. I just can't place where I've tasted it before. Coke from Holland and Ireland are both very good.

Jungle Jim's just must be out of Dublin Dr Pepper because I bought a bunch there last October ($1.79/bottle)

I know this is a bit old, but I have had the opportunity to taste Mexican Coke on several occasions recently. Yonkers, NY has a large Mexican community, and most of their groceries sell Mexican Coke (and Pepsi). I found the taste a tad bitter, but it was still a nice treat. One store even had Coke from Ecuador (it was in a 330ml bottle-I snapped that one up for the collection.) All these stores sell American Coke, of course (from CCE-Elmsford, NY) and I can't help but wonder what the bottler thinks of this. And I wonder how many of the bottles make it back to Mexico?

I'd say right around ZERO. I wonder how the Mexican bottlers feel having to keep buying new glass bottles. But then again, they are really on a fast track with converting from glass to plastic down there.
