I have a curious question. I am a huge soda fan, but one thing I have never understood is why that a 20oz bottle of soda, is more money than a 2 liter bottle of soda. Is it because of convinience or impulse, or is there some scheme behind this. I also have notices that the price of a 20oz coke has gone up from $1.09 at the local supermarkets to $1.19. Probably a dumb question thats been answered, but its like 2am and that question just came to mind for some reason.

Be grateful. In places like DC here, 20oz are much more than that.

It's completely impulse. Much like water or milk, you can buy a gallon or 2-liter for much cheaper than a 20oz or 12oz bottle.

Many factors.
Ease of use. They are portioned sized for a grab and go kind of life. They are mostly cold already, in a place at the grocery/gas station/home depot where they can be easily accessed.
Your are paying for the convenience.
2 liters are the smartest soda purchasing choice, as they for the most part on sale at 99c or less.
But, do any one grab and go with them, and can you find them pre chilled? Nope.

I never said, you cant start a new topic on this because I already started one. He asked a question and I told him where he can find the answers. Whats wrong with that? Actually I wonder the same thing, It seems weird to me seeing a 2 liter bottle at the same price of a 20 oz. Coke or even cheaper... while here in Mexico a 600 ml bottle costs .65 cents (6.50 pesos) and a 2 liter costs $1.40 (14 pesos)...

I think that in U.S., like jmyjunk said, the pricing is more based on convenience, while here in Mexico IMO the pricing is based in content and packaging...

Yes, it is the convenience of the bottle size. People buy them so everyone is willing to sell them. Stores and soda companies make most of their profit from 20 oz. Yes the prices have been creeping up on 20 oz. but prices have been increasing on all the other packages as well. At a convenience store chain in this area, 12 packs are now retailing for $5.39! That's one 12 pack, and people buy them. They're not flying off the shelves but some are definitely sold. We pay for convenience.

It's actually a wonder we have any money at all. Seems most everything we use, they could jack the price up and we'd still buy it. I think a lot of retailers, selling pretty much anything, are catching on to that. I think they've learned a lot from the gasoline market. When you hear people say they have been affected by the price, but still have not changed their lifestyle, it speaks volumes. I hear common people say that the price of gas is still too low. And then you have the housing market. It seemed the higher the price went, the more buyers you had.

I often think I am the only one I know who has drastically changed the way I buy. Maybe that will change when everyone has reached their limit on all twelve of their charge cards [img]tongue.gif[/img]
