As has been speculated for quote some time, Coke is dropping the "Classic" name. From The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Coca-Cola Co. said Friday it plans to drop the “Classic” tag from its top-selling soda — providing a final chapter to the New Coke debacle.

Confirming a report in today’s issue of Beverage Digest, the company said “Classic” would be dropped in the first half of the year.

Coke added Classic to the label in 1985 in the United States as it brought back the original formula. The return to the original formula was triggered by consumer backlash over the introduction of New Coke.

I had mentioned this a few weeks ago about Caffeine Free Coke but I was not informed that regular Coke was dropping the word classic as well. Now that it is made for the public it is official.

Originally I was told that Caffeine Free Coca-Cola classic was being renamed to Caffeine Free Coke because nobody thought of it as really being linked to new Coke or Coca-Cola classic so there was no need for it.

Is the packaging any different?

The packaging will be the same. The only difference is the word "classic" will only be near the nutrition facts under the word Coke. The Coca-Cola script will still remain on both sides of the cans and bottles.

I don't know why coca cola doesn't take out the classic early....

perhaps they thought now was the perfect time to drop "classic", since everyone is distracted by the new pepsi logo... lol

This is long overdue. "Classic" doesn't differentiate it from anything.

So - we're just going to have a plain bright red can with the coca cola script on it?

This is making my graphic design side tingle a little bit. In a very good way.

Before the word "classic" was chosen not going to be that name, there were a fw different names considered and two of them made it into test market. Coca-Cola original, and Coca-Cola classic.

They had cans for Coca-Cola original as well but the cans with the word "classic" was chosen instead. I think they made the right choice at the time.
