On a DC-Area-specific foodie forum, a guy talking about this year's Passover Coke claims he and his wife noticed a taste difference. As for the differences between sugar harvested from sugar beets and cane sugar: SUGAR, SUGAR / Cane and beet share the same chemistry but act differently in the kitchen
So for people saying "it tastes funny," it might be because of minerals from the beet refining. =/
Personally my first impression of Pepsi and MD Throwback was "it tastes like Diet Pepsi/Diet Mountain Dew." I've warmed to it, though.

Interesting. It's worth reading the comments at the bottom of the article.

I like the comment from the guy who thought Pepsi Throwback had the apple extract in it.

Mountain Dew and Pepsi Throwback can both be found at Wal-Mart in Springfield, Illinois. I have checked several grocery stores with no success, but scored at Wal-Mart. I cleaned them out of Dew! I will be visiting the other Wal-Mart's to try to get more, and hopefully the North end gets restocked!
These sodas taste great - I love the clean finish. Regular Dew is thick and has an aftertaste. Regular Pepsi is pretty disgusting - I prefer Coke, but Throwback is very drinkable. I agree with the others here that they could be a bit more carbonated.
Hoping this can become a regular product, but I'm not counting on it!

The guys on the Outdoor siren board are raving about them on the Off Topic page!
Life is too short to drink crummy sodas...

Finally got some MD Throwback. I haven't decided what I think about it yet. The only time I tried it the can was warm and I put in a glass of ice. I don't think it was cold enough so I wasn't that crazy about it. I'll try it again once the cans are pre-chilled.

I love Mountain Dew throwback, it's delicious. The first few bottles/cans I tried were so clean and crisp! But after drinking my last can, I noticed a ginger-ale like aftertaste. I don't like ginger ale, and it has no place in my Mountain Dew drinking experience. I think the absence of OJ has made throwback less bold in flavor, which is uneccesary. It would be great to use the formula they have now and just substitute HFCS with sugar, rather than tweaking the flavors in other ways. Availability is random... it seems that shelvers are getting it mixed up with regular dew, since its placement and presence varies from day to day, even in the same store. Acme (NJ) is the only place I've seen it in can form.

Well, the period for this limited edition is about up. I wonder how much of a success this will be considered, and if they'll try it again someday. One thing I noticed in Colorado, they sold out a couple of weeks ago, but then I come back yesterday and found a few stores had been restocked, and the product had a newer production date on it than the first run, May 1. Not sure where bottler code AS is though, it's not Denver, which is DW. Up in Wyoming everything is pretty much sold out now.
I gave my brother my last two cans of Mountai Dew Throwback yesterday - he never saw any of it for sale in Colorado - and he didn't like it, said it tasted like it had been left open in the fridge for a couple days.
