I give raises and bonuses to my employees when I feel that they have shown some incentive and a positive attitude and produced results for me. I think only an idiot would not want to reward someone for increasing their business; building a good reputation. Without saying that I agree with everything I've heard about whatever Jim Turner does (as I've never met him), I can say that if he's a good businessman and you're showing him that you want him to profit from your existence at his company, he would most likely without your pressure, give you a raise when the time is appropriate.
I've got one employee who is so enthusiastic and loyal that he always does his best to make sure things go right for me. He will drive & deliver til after midnight if necessary, and he collects from slow pays and he lets me know who I should beware of and so forth. A few years ago I paid off all of his credit card debt with the prerequisite that he cut up all of his cards and not get another. I let him pay me back interest free over a year and basically let him earn the money to pay me back through performance-related bonuses. If it's not enough that he appreciates that I did that for him, on my birthday he came to me and told me that my present this year would be that every time he ever breaks accidentally a case of soda, he will buy the case and drink whatever didn't break. He told me that he thinks he'll break less if he buys what he breaks, and he said that who knows, he may discover that he likes a soda he had never tried. So now it's on me to find out how to outdo that on his next birthday and so forth. And if you're an employee like that you will never have to even consider not getting a raise unless the company folds. I know that this one employee makes me feel so secure about whatever is under his care that I wouldn't even think of passing up the opportunity to show my appreciation.
Keep in mind that the King Of Pop\'s crown is not made from a bunch of melted aluminum cans!
