I think that's why Crystal Pepsi failed, and I think was doomed to fail. I liked Crystal Pepsi a lot, it was a lighter no-caffeine cola that I would drink when I didn't want caffeine. That's something people have learned to expect from a "clear" soda, thanks to Sprite and 7-up. So that's how Pepsi designed it - an alternative soda to compete with other clear sodas in their own category, just with a cola flavoring. Then when sales fell off they added lemon to it to even bring it closer to the 7-up category, which ruined the drink as far as I was concerned.
But to many people didn't understand this at all and thought Crystal was just a gimmick clear version of Pepsi. Some peopole expected something in the 7-up category and some people expected something like real Pepsi, and not enough people were satisified with the result. So, the project was probably doomed from the start.
