I just saw this today. Rock Star with Cola flavoring. I wonder if Russel Simmons DefCom 3 did really well, or if Rock Star is just trying to pull in more new customers with a drink that doesnt taste like an energy drink. I dont like Colas, Im a Diet Coke drinker, any one tried this yet?

I just heard about it yesterday. Since RS is distributed here by DPSU I doubt they will roll it out.

Why has it taken so long for an energy drink maker to create a cola flavor? The only other energy drink i've ever heard of with cola flavor was the Canadian version of Jones's Whoop Ass.

The overall number of Cola drinkers to Energy drinkers is HUGELY dispraportionate in favor of Cola drinkers. If RS can snag away even .01% of cola drinkers and introduce them to the energy category through energy cola you are still talking of a customer base of millions of people.

Also, the on premise implications of this drink could be HUGE if executed correctly. Think about it..Rum and coke and jack and coke are two of the most popular drinks in bars/clubs. Bar owners make more money on a Red Bull and Vodka sale then on anything else. However, red bull only mixes well with cetain liqours. Now bar owners can upsell their customers on THEIR WHOLE bar instead of just half of it. RUm and Energy Coke instead of Rum and coke. Bar owners make more money on the upsell and the customer gets the effect they want.

The mistake that many energy drinks have made in the past is that they try to take on Red Bull head to head in the on-premise market (Brand x energy drink vs. Red Bull). RS energy cola takes red bull on sideways..On red Bull's turf, but with a line they can not compete with... YET.

On a side note I would not be suprised if Coke & Pepsi develope their own energy colas in two lieters or bag in a box within 5 years. What do you guys think??

I have been making this point for several months now! Hollywood Beach Beverages has BIB that is great tasting sugar free and carb free! It mixes well with all liquors and is doing very well in limited release.
