The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has withdrawn the soft drink industry request to use the term “and/or” on its packaging labelling.

Since 1993 the industry has had a special exemption request to use "and/or" labelling on soft drinks. This has been used in particular with regards to sweetening ingredients on their products.

In a statement yesterday, the Sugar Association claimed that the major soft drink manufacturers list 'high fructose corn syrup and/or sucrose,' in ingredient statements when in fact sugar has not been used in major soft drinks since the mid 1980s.

"This is a win for all consumers," stated Andy Briscoe, president and CEO of the Sugar Association. "It confirms the importance of accuracy in labeling on consumer products. The law prohibits the listing of an ingredient that is not actually present in the product."

Once again even more reason for people to shape up and get that HFCS garbage out of our beloved beverages! HFCS is not sugar it is garbage.

so does this mean it'll cost more now for those bottlers who seasonally produce some Kosher products for Passover - now they'll have to have complete labels made up instead of a different cap or stamp marking the difference?

other than that, I say it's about time, I always thought that "and/or" stuff was too misleading, it should have been dropped years ago when they stopped blending sweeteners in the 80s.
