Osmonics Enhances Control Precision of New Ozone Generator

MINNETONKA, Minn., January 28, 2002 – To meet customer demands and new regulatory requirements limiting the maximum contamination level (MCL) of bromate in drinking water, Osmonics, Inc. (NYSE: OSM) has significantly improved the ozone production control capability of its E-Series Ozone Generator. The E-Series generator now controls ozone production to the nearest 0.3 percent, compared to 6.25 percent in the past. This gives customers more precise ozone production control, helping to limit the amount of bromate created as a byproduct of ozone disinfection.

The Osmonics E-Series generator already exhibited the best linear output and control of any ozone generator in the marketplace, but the control step increments of 6.25 percent were not optimal for applications requiring lower production outputs. By improving ozone generation control and increasing the number of possible control steps from 16 to over 300, the E-Series generator is able to deliver virtually continuous linear control capability.

“For some applications, including water disinfection in the beverage and aquatics industries, ozone is the method of choice for killing biological pathogens,” said Dale Mork, Osmonics ozone specialist. “We refined the amount of ozone gas the E-Series generators produce to the nearest 0.3 percent, because we understand that for some applications it’s important to offer the greatest ozone production control possible. One such application is disinfection of bottled water.”

Bromate, a suspected carcinogen, is created when ozone or chloride dioxide reacts with the naturally occurring bromide ion in source water. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently ruled to limit the MCL of bromate in drinking water to an annual average of 10 parts per billion (ppb). Reducing ozone doses and contact times, which require precise ozone production control, can further reduce the amount of bromate formed as a byproduct of ozone disinfection.

The presence of bromate is of particular concern to bottled water plants relying on spring water for water supply, because the bromide ion is a naturally occurring salt present in many spring water sources. Using a high-precision ozone generator is one of the only ways of reducing bromate as a byproduct of ozonation.
