Major Beverage Wholesaler Monarch Beverage Deploys Symbol Technologies Handheld Computers to Mobile Workforce

Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL), a global leader in enterprise mobility solutions, has teamed with Vermont Information Processing, Inc., to deploy Symbol handheld computers to the delivery and pre-sales mobile workforce of Monarch Beverage Company, Inc., a major beer, wine and liquor distributor based in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The handheld computing solution, built around the Symbol SPT 1800 ruggedized handheld computer and Vermont Information Processing software, improves the efficiency of Monarch’s sales and delivery force, providing Monarch with a competitive advantage in the marketplace. This solution enables salespeople and drivers to capture critical market data on the spot and transmit it electronically back to Monarch’s host computer, eliminating the need for redundant data entry by back office staff and allowing faster and greater accuracy of order invoicing.

The Symbol SPT 1800’s integrated bar code scanner facilitates faster and more precise data entry, while software written by VIP lets the driver capture the customer signature on the computer screen, thereby completing and storing the transaction electronically. An invoice is printed with an attached printer so the customer can keep a paper copy. The Symbol SPT 1800 resides in a truck-mounted cradle between customer stops and sends and receives important information, such as vehicle location, via GPS, and routing and picking information via the Cingular wireless Internet network. This data, previously unmeasured, provides Monarch with important operational information that will help it better manage a large resource base.

“The technology also fosters greater customer relationships and enhanced customer service,” said Fred Dufour, operations manager, Monarch Beverage. “When our workers have information at their fingertips and can answer daily customer questions and concerns with confidence, they can form a stronger customer bond.”

“We are pleased that Monarch Beverage selected Symbol and VIP as its route sales and delivery solutions partners,” said Barry Issberner, vice president, vertical marketing, Symbol Technologies. “The highly advanced solution deployed at Monarch incorporating wireless wide area networking and global positioning systems will give Monarch a sustainable real-time competitive advantage.”
