As a growing number of angel investors in early stage beverage companies comes from within the industry itself, the insight of successful beverage company founders and executives who have gone on to become successful investors became an informative panel discussion at BevNET Live Summer 2012.
The panel featured four angel investors who have decades of combined experience in the beverage industry and played integral roles in the growth and development of successful beverage companies. Honest Tea TeaEO Seth Goldman, Fantasia Juice founder Brad Barnhorn, Oregon Chai co-Founder Brian Ross and longtime natural products broker and investor Bruce Nierenberg have each served as advisers and made early-stage investments in a number of emerging and on-trend beverage companies including ZICO, Mamma Chia, Izze, Cheribundi, Glaceau, Coba, Zola and many others.
The discussion covered a range of topics with regard to angel investing, including how the evolution of the beverage industry and a rise in the number of acquisitions in the market – in particular, Coca-Cola’s $4.1 billion purchase of Vitaminwater – has led to a rapidly changing landscape in angel investments.
“I think the Vitaminwater deal changed a lot of expectations, probably not to the good because everyone is going to tell you their valuation is 16-fold sales,” said Goldman. “Good luck with that.”
