Massachusetts City Considering Soda Ban Modeled After NYC Proposal

The concern that New York City’s proposed ban on the sale of large-size sodas and other sugary beverages may spill over to other cities is becoming a reality. According to The Boston Globe, Cambridge, MA Mayor Henrietta Davis proposed the idea of a similar sugary drink ban at a city council meeting last night, stating that “in addition to being an obesity threat, soda is one of the contributing factors to an increasing rate in diabetes and heart disease amongst younger people.”

Davis’ said the ban would be modeled after New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s which would prevent the sale of drinks containing more than 25 calories per 8 oz. serving in packages larger than 16 ounces that are served at restaurants, delis, and movie theaters. Drinks that contain 100 percent juice, diet drinks, drinks getting half of their calories from dairy or dairy substitutes, and alcoholic drinks would be exempt from the ban.

Although members of the Cambridge city council appeared to have a positive stance on the ban, the group voted to refer the proposal to its health subcommittee to explore. And amidst concerns that the NYC’s proposed sugary drink ban has a caused a backlash of criticism, one member of the council also recommended that Cambridge wait to make any final decision until the issue has “sorted itself out in New York.”

Ignorance is no excuse

One becomes amazed at the ideas that run through the minds of so-called decision makers. Perhaps one should consider that the true cause of certain health risks are not what they appear to be. As an example, HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) is not Cane Sugar. HFCS has permeated the food and drink sectors over 30 years (its cheap), not Cane Sugar, resulting in the increase of various health risks. Though over consumption of anything will cause negative side effects, I will consume Cane Sugar over HFCS any day.

Secondly, Diet products are made mostly with man made chemical based sweeteners; one only needs to use historical data plotting the industry growth (not to mention HFCS) to see the results: greater number of obesity and cancers among the US population since their introduction.

What should be banned is Sodium Fluoride in all water and products, HFCS, Aspartame and a host of other toxic chemicals.

Nature provides food and drink fit for consumption. Man’s attempt to fool humanity in to believing the illusion of “the grass is greener on the other side” result in the present condition of the US population…and continued manipulative ignorance will enhance the problem.

Well said sir ! It is interesting to note that when V.P. Cheney took office, he quickly ordered all military pilots to cease consumption of Aspartame. He was privy to studies that showed it’s use would “dumb you down” including slowing your reaction time. He previously ran the company that made it.

I don’t think its anyone’s business to try and control what a person eats or drinks. The government on all levels are getting into too much of peoples private lives. Sounds more and more like a communist run country.

It is not at all!. I was born and raised in the biggest communist country in the world and it is not even close. You are absolutely wrong, wrong, wrong!! This is actually what communist countries are lacking, have lacked, and have been lacking. You just do not understand how lucky you are to have such a great goverement, government that protects, and cares about its people well being. Pepople just do not understand the purpose of a goverement, a good goverement.

Which country do you speak of? How many other countries have you live in? to what extent does one have others dictate their lives? Is it not better to manage ones own life than others?

SSSR. I have also traveled around the world and had a chance to see and feel the difference. The concept and the outcome of the communism is very similar in other small communist contries. Believe me. I am talking from a real expirience. The problem I see is that people are trying to compare incomparable. I agee with the point of managing own life than others, but it is not about managing someones life. It is a very big misunderstanding. Noone is really prohibiting you from killing yourself by consuming unhealthy products. You can still do and eat whatever you want. It is about corporations promoting unhealthy lifestyle to generate more revenue. Their goal is to generate as much as possible and this is not a bad thing. However, they are willing to take any measure to generate it, even if it is againts people’s well being. Therefore, they come up with a very sofisticated ways to persuade people that it is ok to do that. They have a lot of knowledge, resources and power to do what they want to do with you. Goverment is trying to protect you by regulating businesses and educating their citizens to make right choices, but not prohibiting you doing something different that you used to do. Goverement is simply providing you with a choice that corporations are trying to take from you. The less choice you have the more money they can generate from selling you the product that is very profitable for a company. There is nothing wrong if the product is good for you. You just need to be able to recognize what is good and what is bad. Companies will never tell you that, because they want you to buy their product.
It is a very big question and issue I cannot answer it completely in this post. I am just giving you some food for thought.
