BI Nutraceuticals CEO to discuss effective methods for organic sterilization at SupplyExpo

LONG BEACH, Calif., February 2, 2009 — BI Nutraceuticals today announced that its president and CEO, George Pontiakos, will be leading an education session entitled “Sterilization Techniques for Ingredients: Safe, Organic Alternatives, Including Dry Steam Sterilization” at the SupplyExpo tradeshow being held in conjunction with Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, Calif. from March 5 – 8. On Saturday, March 7 from 8:30 – 10 a.m. in room 207B at the Anaheim Convention Center, Pontiakos will present information on safe, organic sterilization options for botanicals, including dry steam sterilization, as well as educate attendees on the dangers – both legal and ethical – of using irradiation or ethylene oxide as a means of raw material sterilization.

“Manufacturers in the industry may not realize that the use of ETO and irradiation for the purpose of reducing or eliminating microbial loads is not permitted right now and products containing raw materials that have been treated by these methods are subject to FDA penalties,” noted Pontiakos. “This session provides a unique opportunity for industry members to learn more about dry steam sterilization and other safe, legal alternatives to ETO and irradiation, especially for the sterilization of organics.”

Attendees will learn how super-heated dry steam reduces microbiological load, yielding results comparable to treating ingredients with ETO or irradiation, but without the potential regulatory issues. Additionally, there will be discussion surrounding organic ingredient trends, as well as the challenges manufacturers face when trying to source certified-organic ingredients.

As president and CEO of BI Nutraceuticals, Pontiakos oversees the company”s worldwide operations. BI has manufacturing and processing facilities in Long Beach, Calif., Long Island, N.Y., Boonton, N.J. and Suzhou and Shanghai, China.
