Study Establishes Health Benefits of Whole Grape Extract

SAN ANSELMO, Calif. — Many people today struggle to maintain better balanced cholesterol levels and are looking for ways to avoid the more serious levels of heart disease. A study, just published in the Journal of Functional Foods (January 11, 2014 issue), opens the door to a new range of products in this important area of health. This study is the first to be published in North America that establishes the benefits of a whole grape extract (WGE) on cholesterol balance, total cholesterol and antioxidant effects.

Scientists from KGK Synergize administered 350 mg daily of VinCare®, a patented WGE from Ethical Naturals Inc. (ENI) to 24 human subjects in a six-week randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial. They found that the VinCare® group experienced significantly increased HDL-cholesterol (“good” cholesterol) levels compared to the placebo group. Moreover, the study found that levels of 8-isoprastane (a marker of oxidative stress) and oxidized LDL (a risk factor for heart disease) fell for the extract group.
Given that all subjects exhibited symptoms for either pre-hypertension, overweight, pre-diabetes, or a combination, the results are particularly promising for population health.
“Our team put a lot of work into the development, patenting and GRAS affirmation of this ingredient (VinCare®),” comments Cal Bewicke, President of ENI. “This is something of a breakthrough, and does open the door for a new range of products in this important area of health support.”
Ethical Naturals Inc. (ENI), a leading supplier of botanical ingredients to the U.S. and worldwide, produces VinCare® in a patented process. And while grapes and their corresponding extracts, with resveratrol, polyphenols, proanthocyanidins, and flavonoids have long been known to benefit overall health, this study demonstrates the impact of VinCare® on total cholesterol/HDL-C ratios, which were significantly improved for the extract group.
“The report provides specific, dose-related information for the use of a grape extract that supports cardiovascular health and antioxidant activity,” says Bewicke. “So the results of this study are very gratifying to us.”
