BevNET Review: As far as protein drinks go, Mix1's Vanilla All Natural Protein Shake is a very enjoyable entry. The flavor is milder and lighter in body than your standard protein drink, with a pleasantly sweet vanilla bean flavor and a slightly chalky finish. There's a slight note of what almost tastes like fruit flavor in the backdrop, which is perhaps the result of their fruit blend antioxidants. Functionally, the drink delivers 15 grams of whey protein isolate per serving, a 2 to 1 carb to protein ratio, and antioxidants equal to 3 servings of fruits and veggies (ORAC 500). Packaging is an 11 oz. Tetra Pak, which has a clean, active look to it. It definitely feels like a functional product, which is more than we can say for some of Mix1's other products. That said, we think that this product is more intuitive and appealing (both in package and flavor) than the company's other products. Overall, a strong effort from Mix1. Reviewed on: 7/26/2011

BevNET Review: Of the two flavors that initially make up Mix1's All Natural Protein Shake, the Chocolate flavor was the one that we preferred. While some of this is a matter of personal preference, we thought the chocolate flavor definitely helped mask the drink's finish a bit more than the vanilla flavoring does. The sugar sweetened formulation is clean and extremely drinkable, whether you are into protein drinks or not. Still, the drink's functional makeup is very marketable, with 15g of protein, 190 calories, 2.5g of fat, 500 ORAC, and a 2 to 1 carb to protein ratio. Packaging is a well designed 11 oz. Tetra Pak container, which has a very simple and clean two color design that is easily identifiable as a chocolate-flavored product due to the brown color. Plus, we appreciate that they took the effort to keep text somewhat to a minimum and organize these elements in an easy to read fashion. Overall, a very enjoyable protein drink that is our new favorite product from Mix1. Reviewed on: 7/26/2011

BevNET Review: Utilizing the classic orange cream pop flavor, Mix1's Orange-Twist lean performance protein shake is an enjoyable and nourishing product. Featuring 10g of protein per bottle and only 90 calories, this product is a lighter offering that doesn't skimp on nutritional ingredients. They've also included 3g of fiber, antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, lycopene, zeaxanthin, and cryptoxanthin. As far as flavor goes, the product has orange, apple, and carrot juices, which, when paired with the milky body of the product, has the creamy orange flavor that gives the product its name. They've sweetened the product with sugar and stevia, which helps keep the calories and carbs in check. There's a slight amount of sweetener taste to the finish, but it doesn't really impact the overall enjoyment of the product. On the packaging front, they've utilized the same 11 oz. bottle that has been their package since day one, but they've chosen lighter pastel colors to signify that this is a "light" product. They've chosen to call out the calories on the front of the package, which seems like a smart move. However, we think that they should put more emphasis on the words "protein shake," which is ultimately why someone is probably going to purchase this product ("lean performance" doesn't add much to the party). Nit picking aside, this is a very enjoyable product that's definitely worth a try if you are into protein enhanced beverages. Reviewed on: 11/8/2010

BevNET Review: Of the two "Lean Performance" flavors that have recently been added to the Mix1 lineup, Acai-Pomegranate is our favorite. While it doesn't exactly taste like acai and pomegranate (it does have acai and pomegranate juices), it tastes quite good and, more importantly, the flavors help mask the functional ingredients (and stevia sweetener) that power this product. It also drinks much more smoothly, with a tart and tangy flavor that nicely complements the milky tasting base of the product. Functionally, this product has lots of good stuff inside, with 10g of protein, 3g of fiber, antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, lycopene, zeaxanthin, and cryptoxanthin contained in the formulation. Packaging is a place that could use a bit of refinement, with "protein shake" not getting the right level of emphasis. Simplifying the pitch by either removing "lean performance" or saying "protein + performance" might make it easier for the consumer to understand. Otherwise, we like what they've done with the product's packaging — it's both appealing and credible looking. Overall, a very enjoyable addition to the Mix1 line.Reviewed on: 11/8/2010

BevNET Review: Mix1’s “hi-antioxidant fiber drink” is an interesting concept, packing 9 servings of fruits and vegetables, ORAC of 4500, 8g of fiber, 9g of protein, and more into each square 11 oz. bottle. And maybe equally as important is what’s not in this bottle (soy, lactose, gluten, caffeine). Inside the bottle, you’ve got a flavor that starts out rather bitter (likely from the whey protein isolate), but our palates quickly warmed up to it. The product contains juice (although they don’t disclose how much) in the form of apple, acai, and pomegranate, but, due to the strength of the other flavors, you can’t really distinguish them from the mix. There isn’t much sweetness to the product, which is no surprise given that the drink has only 9g of sugar per bottle (it uses sugar and luo han guo). From a design and positioning point of view, we find it somewhat hard to make sense of this product. Positioning it as a “hi-antioxidant fiber drink” is both wordy and neglects some of the other marketable ingredients (such as protein). Vertical text makes things hard to read, while the sheer volume of it makes the selling points somewhat confusing. So, we’d propose focusing on fiber and protein and making the antioxidants a tertiary benefit. In addition, mentioning the fruit juices, rather than the ambiguous “dark berry”, would like help whet the consumer’s appetite a bit more. But don’t take these criticisms the wrong way – the drink is very close and these are mostly items that need simple refinement. Otherwise, we really like the concept, the nutrition, and the flavor. Definitely one of the better -- and more innovative -- drinks that Mix1 has created.Reviewed on: 1/15/2010

BevNET Review: Orange Twist is one of the new “hi-antioxidant fiber drink” flavors from Mix1. It features a flavor that is designed to be similar to the classic “orange and crème” flavor that is found in many CSD lines. The drink features orange, apple, and carrot juice concentrates, which certainly help the product have a rather natural fruit flavor. As far as the fruit flavor goes, though, it’s really muted, with the overwhelming flavor being the bitterness of the protein. It’s only lightly sweetened with sugar, to the tune of 9g, but there’s enough sweetness there to satisfy the palate. The body is milky in body, but thin, despite this being a lactose and soy free product. In terms of what’s makes this product tick, it’s loaded with fiber (8g), protein (9g), several vitamins (C,E), and has a high ORAC value (4500). There are also several other less traditional ingredients, including extra light olive oil, lycopene, zeaxanthin, cryptoxanthin, and luo han guo (an alternative sweetener). While we personally prefer the Dark Berry flavor to this one, it’s still quite good, with our only technical concern being the quick separation of the protein from the mix (you need to shake it somewhat frequently). Otherwise, we like their unique approach to the drink – there’s really nothing else like it. That said, we can certainly understand why they ended up trying to classify this as a “hi-antioxidant fiber drink,” but that doesn’t really give the buyer the whole picture: it fails to mention the protein, which is clearly a key part of this drink. Both of these issues result in a disconnect between what’s marketed to the consumer and what they get inside the bottle. Like most products that put a lot of text on their labels, Mix1’s Orange Twist needs a more polished message and it could benefit from a little design work to help make the package look a bit more appetizing. BevNET Review: With its pleasant citrus flavor, Mix1's Tangerine is probably their best work to date. There's a noticeable tang to the body of the product, which is followed by Mix1's protein laced body. All of the added fruit juices (tangerine, apple, and lemon) can be distinguished from the body of the drink -- a definite sign of quality. The thick body of the drink definitely has substance, although we're not sure that this would truly replace a meal for us. Lastly, there's the packaging, which uses an attractive orange shade on Mix1's rectangular style bottle. Overall, Mix1 has done a nice job of blending flavor, substance, and design into an enjoyable product.Reviewed on: 2/18/2008

BevNET Review: Mix 1's "Mix Berry" features a mash up of fruit flavors that will be familiar to anyone who has ever had berry flavored yogurt in the US market (and no, this isn't a yogurt based product). It's hard to pick out the individual flavors from this product (we notice notes of strawberry and blueberry), but fortunately for Mix 1, it's still a pretty pleasant tasting drink. The packaging, which uses a red colored label, has a functional vibe to it -- but, on the other hand, it lacks something in terms of general aesthetics, especially when it is competing for shelf space with more colorfully designed products. BevNET Review: Mix 1's Mango flavor is a good example of proper flavor pairing. Specifically, they've blended a mixture of mango and apple, which are naturally sweet and sour, with the base of protein and vitamins. The result is something that has both natural fruit flavor and richness -- exactly what we look for in a meal replacement product. Packaging uses a bright yellow label, which is, in our opinion, the most attractive of the bunch. Definitely worth a try.Reviewed on: 9/20/2007

BevNET Review: The Lime flavor of Mix 1 tastes very much like other protein based drinks that we've sampled over the years, complete with the pasty bitter finish. The lime flavor tastes a bit too much like flavoring, but it does a good job of bringing some balance to the body of the product, which is undoubtedly what will keep consumers coming back for more. Unlike mainstream smoothie products, Mix 1 actually delivers substance, helping to satisfy your appetite and thirst. A bit more fruit flavor would be nice, but this is a valiant first effort. Packaging is in line with other smoothie and meal replacement products, but with a simpler less cluttered approach. Overall, it tastes good and is packaged good -- the real question is whether or not the mainstream market is ready for something like this.Reviewed on: 9/20/2007

BevNET Review: Blueberry Vanilla is a very solid addition to the Mix 1 lineup. The blueberry flavor in particular is very natural and fresh tasting, while the vanilla helps mask the bitter finish that we noticed in at least one of the other varieties. The purple package fits with the theme, although there's something about the brick shaped bottle that feels sterile (rather than appetizing) to us. Still, the product delivers on its promise, offering a mix of good flavor and something that will satisfy your hunger.
