Camu & Water

Product Type:Other; Container: 11.5oz Glass
BevNET Review: Ahhmigo’s Camu & Water is a cap-activated beverage that contains a host of ingredients that are dispensed into the bottle of water at the time of consumption. Having tried a lot of cap activated beverages, we can say that this is one of the easier caps to figure out (just twist and push). However, mixing the ingredients contained in the cap requires a near violent level of shaking to get the ingredients to properly suspend in the liquid (it will turn pink if you’ve done it right). From a flavor perspective, this variety has a very light fruit flavor that has an earthy note and a touch of sweetness to its finish. The ingredients in the cap include maple sugar, camu camu extract, manioc root extract, acerola berry, amla berry, buckwheat berry sprouts, blueberry, cranberry, cherry, rose hips, lemon peel, and black pepper berry extract. Unfortunately, there isn’t a ton of flavor that has been developed from all of these ingredients, which is disappointing after the amount of shaking that was required. If they could infuse more flavor -- and improve how long the ingredients stay in suspension -- we’d enjoy this beverage more. On the outside, the 11.5 oz. glass bottle looks nice, at least once you’ve mixed the product. Before that, the metallic gold logo is hard to read on the clear backdrop. Furthermore, we’re not 100% sold on the use of a glass bottle, which certainly limits where you can take this product. Overall, it’s an interesting concept, but it’s also one that needs to be refined more. Reviewed on: 1/7/2013

Chia & Water

Product Type:Other; Container: 11.5oz Glass
BevNET Review: Blending only water and chia, the Chia & Water variety of Ahhmigo is the simplest flavor of the lineup. Simply twist, push, and shake the bottle to create the finished product. For better or worse, chia seeds don’t float nice and evenly in water, so expect to see a layer and the top and at the bottom. Otherwise, the product delivers exactly what it says it will, with 11.5 oz of water and chia seeds (black chia seeds in the unit we sampled). There’s not really any flavor to this, aside from the subtle earthiness of the chia seed. If you let them soak for a while, they’ll gel up a bit, creating an experience that definitely requires some chew. The packaging looks nice, at least in theory, but from a practical perspective we have two issues. First, the front of the bottle is hard to read thanks to gold and red lettering that’s on a clear backed label (and has clear liquid behind it). Adding some white or another color to the label’s background will alleviate this concern. Second, the amount of effort required to make this product is greater than buying a bottle of water and a stick pack of chia. And since this product doesn’t really offer much in the way of value over going down the DIY path, we think that’s a real issue for building a repeat customer base for this variety. If they can figure out something else to add, be it in flavor or function, we think that they might have something. Until then, this product is fine, but its niche definitely feels a bit limited in the long run. Reviewed on: 1/7/2013

Greens & Water

Product Type:Other; Container: 11.5oz Glass
BevNET Review: Of the Ahhmigo lineup of cap-activated beverages, Greens & Water definitely feels like the most developed concept. Featuring a rather lengthy list of ingredients contained in the cap (64 total ingredients), they’ve decided to divide up the ingredient list by ingredient type, which includes algae, phytonutrients & enzymes, extracts & mushrooms, green juices, western herbs, and natural antioxidants. Like the other flavors of Ahhmigo, all you have to do is twist, push, and shake to turn the liquid from clear (it starts as water) to dark green. As for the flavor, it tastes like grassy green tea, which definitely seems like a good flavor profile for a product of this type to have (especially considering that it has 10 calories per bottle). Visually, the look of the product is quite nice, at least once you’ve mixed it. Prior to mixing, we have the same concerns that we have for the other flavors: the lettering on the front of the bottle is difficult to read on the clear backdrop. Beyond that, they haven’t explained or justified the reason for putting the ingredients in the cap rather than in the bottle. That’s something that we feel needs to be addressed. Your average consumer sees some inherent value in having their beverages pre-mixed, so taking this away without explanation reduces the value of the drink. That doesn’t bode well for a product that’s certainly more expensive to produce than a standard RTD beverage. Overall, we think that this product is off to a great start, but some refinement and improvement to the messaging would help push it over the finish line. Reviewed on: 1/7/2013
