Review: Original Alley Cat Tea

(Last Updated: Dec 03, 2014 at 5:08 PM)
Alley Cat is a Tennessee-style “fruit tea” that is the namesake beverage of the Alley Cat Cafe. The owners have bottled the tea and made it available in a ready-to-drink format. The product is 48 percent juice, including orange juice, pineapple juice and lemon juice (all from concentrate), and feels much more of a juice cocktail than anything that resembles tea. It’s very sweet (30g of sugar per 8 oz.), tart and slightly acidic in its finish -- and it definitely tastes like concentrated juice. The tea doesn’t really do much to the flavor, which is a disappointment. Honestly, we’d have a really tough time consuming a lot of this product as it quickly overwhelms the palate. Beyond that, we’re not really sure who the buyer is for this product outside a niche regional demographic. There are a lot of better tasting and higher quality beverages out there. Unfortunately, we’d say the same about the packaging. It feels hastily designed and is very cheap looking. It’s definitely not a package that will help lure in buyers. Ultimately, we really feel as though this product is so far off the mark that its likelihood for success is extremely small.
