Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

ALO drinks are all natural, with no preservatives, artificial colors, or artificial flavors. Four flavors are currently available-- ALO Awaken (a blend of real wheatgrass extract and aloe vera), ALO Exposed (original aloe vera with honey), ALO Enliven (12 fruits & vegetables with aloe vera), and ALO Elated (brewed olive leaf tea & aloe). Escape

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 16.9 oz PET
BevNET Review: ALO’s latest flavor, Escape, is a blend of aloe vera juice (with pulp) and added juices from sea buckthorn berry juice, pineapple juice, and guava juice. The flavor of the drink is sweet, with the aloe vera juice taking center stage. Sea buckthorn berry juice, which is super tart, appears to cut the other flavors, leaving no distinguishable pineapple or guava flavors. Still, the blend of juices is enjoyable and refreshing, with an exotic flavor profile. On the outside, ALO has created what is a light and healthy looking design, which is due, at least in part, to the lack of any ethnic elements to the brand (as are often found in competing drinks). However, at this point, we must question their naming convention, which uses conceptual words rather than flavor descriptors. While it seemed fun at first, the brand has expanded the number of flavors pretty significantly and the names are now confusing and difficult to remember. In addition, it might imply functionality, which is really not what this brand is about. This is something that we hope ALO considers as their brand continues to evolve. Reviewed on: 5/21/2013

Comfort Watermelon & Peach

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 16.9oz Plastic
BevNET Review: Watermelon and aloe are just about as perfect of a flavor pairing as there is, so it’s no surprise that ALO Comfort tastes as good as it does. Plus, the product has added peach juice, which, at least as a tertiary flavor, definitely enhances the experience. That said, it’s still a very straightforward tasting product, with each of the three flavors being easily distinguished from the mix. And this being an ALO product, it still has pieces of aloe pulp floating in the mix. Visually, the product looks and fits the part of the rest of their lineup, but with images of watermelon and a peach and a pinkish background color. We’re still not totally convinced of their conceptual naming convention (watermelon is not a comfort food...), but at least ALO has been consistent in how it has executed these products. Overall, this is our new favorite product from ALO, and it’s one that definitely lives up to the standard set by the other flavors. Reviewed on: 5/19/2013

Enrich

Product Type:Juice: Fruit Juice; Container: 16.9 oz PET
BevNET Review: Made with 30 percent juice, including aloe vera (25 percent of the juice content), pomegranate, and cranberry, ALO Enrich has a pleasant and mildly sweet flavor (thanks to the use of sugar). There’s a little bit of aloe vera pulp in the product, but not as much as some of the other flavors of ALO, making it something that might be a good choice for the uninitiated. All in all, it’s a pretty enjoyable product. On the outside, they’re using the squarish hot fill bottle that’s used for the entire ALO line. It’s busy, but has the vibe of something that’s good for you, with images of aloe, pomegranates, and cranberries on the front panel. The only thing that we don’t get about this product is the use of a conceptual name (“Enrich”) as opposed to just using the fruit flavors for its namesake. Our bet is that’s what consumers will do anyway – and making the fruit flavors more prominent would certainly make it more marketable. Overall, a good addition to the lineup.Reviewed on: 5/7/2010

Appeal

Product Type:Juice: Fruit Juice; Container: 16.9 oz PET
BevNET Review: Starting with a base of 25 percent aloe vera juice, ALO Appeal blends in pomelo, pink grapefruit, and lemon juices and sweetens the mixture with sugar. The resulting product is one of our favorite flavors of ALO, with a sharp citrus flavor that pairs nicely with the soft flavor of the aloe. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, with the liquid having a light mouth feel while pieces of aloe pulp give the product some variety of texture. All in all, this is definitely the most marketable tasting flavor of the ALO line. Packaging looks just like the other ALO flavors, utilizing a square shaped 16.9 oz. hot fill bottle. It has that same healthy vibe that we’ve seen in their other flavors, although the front panel does feel somewhat cluttered to us. In addition, we don’t understand the appeal of the name “Appeal," which sounds like a functional name of some sort. Rebranding this as “Citrus” or something that speaks to the flavor would certainly help create a more appealing product. Overall, it’s really good, but changing up the name would make it more marketable. Reviewed on: 5/7/2010

Allure (Aloe + Mangosteen + Mango)

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 16.9 oz PET
BevNET Review: ALO’s latest flavor is known as “ALLURE” and is a mixture of aloe, mangosteen, and mango. The addition of the mango flavor offers some sweetness that nicely complements the flavor of the aloe (it’s made with 25 percent aloe vera juice and pulp). Plus, it makes for a more familiar and, therefore, marketable mixture. Despite having 36g of sugar per bottle, Allure has a relatively mild level of sweetness, which is good as the rather thick body of this drink would not pair well with a high level of sweetness. All in all, we think that this is definitely one of the better tasting ALO flavors. However, with several flavors as part of this line using similar color tones, we wonder if more prominent placement of the flavor name would work better than a conceptual name like “Allure.” In addition, the product uses a stock 16.9 oz. bottle that many other imported aloe drinks use as well. Usually that’s an issue for us, but ALO has done a nice job designing a label that has a credible health and natural vibe to it, complete with images of aloe, mangosteen, and mango. Selling health and wellness is, in our opinion, a much better angle than selling aloe as an exotic or ethnic beverage as much of the competition is doing. Still, ALO has the same challenge that they do, which is to create demand for a flavor that the American palate doesn’t natively know. Overall, Allure is, at least from a flavor point of view, ALO’s best effort to date and one that offers the consumer an enjoyable and familiar flavor. Reviewed on: 7/31/2009

ALO Exposed

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container:
BevNET Review: Exposed is the "original" variety of the lineup and uses aloe as its sole flavor. It has a medium level of sweetness, which is a bit too much relative to the delicate flavor of the aloe. Pieces of pulp (found in all flavors of ALO) give the product a unique consistency, which will probably appeal to some consumers while alienating others. From a refreshment point of view, they don't really do anything for us aside from reassure us of the manufacturer's intent to create a quality product. Packaging is decent, with a brand name and label design that makes it very obvious as to what the flavor is. On the other hand, we don't like the name "Exposed," which has a naturally negative connotation. Overall, it's good, but if they could dial down the sweetness and change the name, we'd really like this product.Reviewed on: 11/21/2008

ALO Enliven

Product Type:Functional: Protein Drinks and Supplements; Container: 16.9 fl oz PET
BevNET Review: Of the lineup, Enliven is the clear winner in both flavor and marketability. First, the flavor, which tastes exactly like what is advertised on the bottle: aloe mixed with fruit and vegetable juices. It's surprisingly light, but has a pleasantly subtle vegetable flavor to it. The most distinguishable flavor from the veggie mix is celery, which adds a nice complement to that of the aloe. Finally comes the light touch of sweetness, which goes nicely with the flavor of the drink. Using images of aloe, fruits, and vegetables, this product's label is appetizing. However, the vertical text and conceptual name ("Enliven") seems like a risky move for a drink that uses unfamiliar flavors. Overall, a decent looking and tasting product, but they could do a bit more to make it more visually appealing.Reviewed on: 11/21/2008

ALO Elated

Product Type:Functional: Protein Drinks and Supplements; Container: 16.9 fl oz PET
BevNET Review: The "Elated" variety of ALO is a mixture of their base aloe vera juice and brewed olive leaf tea. While mainstream consumers are likely not familiar with olive leaf tea and its benefits, it does have some level of awareness in the health and natural channels. From a flavor point of view, Elated is exactly what we expected from reading the ingredient list: mildly sweet with aloe and olive leaf flavors. The olive leaf flavor is similar in nature to an oolong tea, complete with a subtle nutty flavor. All in all, Elated is a pleasant tasting drink. Branding and packaging are good as far as eye appeal are concerned, but they need to do more to make the product's flavor and purpose obvious. If nothing else, the connection between "Elated" and what's in the drink should be considered -- we don't think it's a name that will help sell this product. Overall, a good tasting entry, but it needs more to sell the product.Reviewed on: 11/21/2008

ALO Awaken

Product Type:Functional: Protein Drinks and Supplements; Container: 16.9 fl oz PET
BevNET Review: ALO's "Awaken" flavor is a blend of aloe vera and wheatgrass flavors, which gives the drink a dark but translucent green appearance. While the flavor is too sweet for our liking, we did enjoy the aloe and wheatgrass flavors. Plus, there's aloe vera pulp, which results in floating chunks of pulp throughout the drink (they have sort of a gelatinous mouth feel). This might create mixed feelings with consumers, some of which will undoubtedly be put off by these while for others it might help reinforce the authenticity of the drink. Packaging is a square 16.9 oz bottle, which has a rather health/natural channel feeling to it. It's a bit busy, but it does, based on the design, feel like a credible looking product. Overall, we'd like to see the sweetness dropped a bit, but otherwise this is a unique and enjoyable entry that will likely fit in nicely in the health and natural channel.Reviewed on: 11/21/2008
