The presumably flagship flavor of the Soda Shaq line is this one, Vanilla Cream Soda. It’s a very straightforward product that delivers the enjoyable flavor of a classic cream soda. Even the ingredients, which include carbonated water, sugar, honey, natural flavor, bourbon vanilla extract and citric acid, are simple and easy to understand. It’s not an overly sweet tasting product, which is a good thing, and the use of sugar gives the product a clean rather than syrupy finish. The packaging, however, is something that we have mixed feelings on. From a design perspective, the product is well-executed. The illustrations are clean and appealing to the eye, and we like the white top that on the can. However, much like Shaq himself, the can is big. Very big. No, too big. 23.5 ounces of soda for $0.99 is, despite the attempt to label this product as having an 8 oz. serving size (it’s non resealable and loses carbonation), a bit much. If this were a smaller or resealable package -- or had less than 270 calories and 72g of sugar per container -- we might feel differently. But right now, there’s something about this product that just doesn’t sit right with us.
