Black Bear Energy

Black Bear Energy

Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

Black Bear B12 is a unique energy supplement from the Mountains of Maine. It is different from all other energy products on the market. Black Bear B12 relies on very high doses of B12 to naturally support energy in the body rather than using stimulants such as caffeine found in other energy products. Vitamin B12 is important for energy, for balance related sports and for endurance sports. It can be depleted by consuming alcoholic beverages, maintaining a poor diet or taking certain medications. Lack of B12 has been associated with fatigue, alcoholic liver disease, anemia, cancer, ulcers, dementia and neural tube defects among other issues. Conversely, higher levels of B12 correlate with improved balance, energy and endurance in athletics.

BevNET Review: Black Bear 500x is a caffeine-free energy drink whose premise is having 500 times the vitamin B12 of a standard energy drink. But not just any B12, they’ve used hydroxocobalamin, which, compared with cyanocobalamin (the traditional form of B12 in beverages), uses a water molecule as opposed to a cyanide molecule (hence making it better for you, according to studies). Otherwise, the product’s functional blend consists of other B vitamins, but lacks caffeine, taurine, or any of the other usual suspects. This makes for a somewhat science-focused point of differentiation, which, in its current form, will certainly require consumer education (assuming consumers are even willing to listen to this message). From a flavor perspective, Black Bear 500x tastes quite good, with a play on the classic energy drink flavor (it’s strawberry lemon) that’s a bit smoother and more pleasant to drink. As for the visual appearance of the drink, the thought of a black bear and its ties to Maine seems like an interesting approach, but what they’ve visually created feels somewhat technical and, with the large 500x, borders on pharmaceutical. Adding some personality and making the science something that’s a secondary discovery or bonus would make this product much more marketable. Overall, we really like the concept and the flavor, but the the product's visual presence is its weakest point right now. Reviewed on: 6/11/2012
