Review: Coconut Chocolate Beverage - 16.9oz Tetra Pak

(Last Updated: Dec 02, 2014 at 11:01 AM)
Blue Monkey’s Chocolate Coconut Water is a chocolate-heavy, not-from-concentrate coconut water that is USDA Organic certified. Unlike its “pure coconut water,” which is made with a single ingredient, this one includes a host of additional ones, including coconut milk, sugar, cocoa powder, guar gum, carrageenan, salt and sodium alginate. The resulting product is rich and decadent in its flavor, with the coconut cream flavor being more powerful than that of the coconut water. Comparing it against the handful of other chocolate coconut waters that we’ve sampled, it’s definitely a good one, assuming you are okay with the product tasting more like a chocolate drink than a coconut water. However, we do question if consumers who are interested in chocolate-flavored coconut water (which is still a small niche) will care about it being not-from-concentrate. On the packaging front, this product comes in a 16.9 oz. Tetra Pak carton with a screw top cap. Instead of using a blue backdrop as Blue Monkey does for its other flavors, this one has more of a beige accent color. This, combined with the green on the top of the carton, makes it look different than their other flavors. Lastly, the product has a bilingual French and English label. All of these things adds up to a package that is not overly intuitive. We’re not suggesting that the company slaps an image of a chocolate bar on the front of it, but Blue Monkey should try to rework it such that the consumer doesn’t have to spend a lot of time figuring out the flavor of the product (which is what we feel as though they’d have to do right now). Overall, nice flavor, but the packaging and positioning need work.
