BevNET Review: Of the initial Body Armor flavors, Tropical Mandarin is the closest to being a traditional sports drink flavor. However, there’s a lot more going on in this product than your typical sports drink, with 10 percent coconut water, amino acids, vitamins, electrolytes, fiber, EGCG, catechins, polyphenols, and other “enhancing” ingredients (hence they’ve gone with the tagline of “Super Drink"). From a flavor perspective, the sugar sweetened mixture is very pleasing to the palate, with a sweet body and notes of tart and tangy fruit flavor (we primarily taste orange and mango). The coconut water is there, but only in the drink’s finish, which should be fine for most drinkers. At 60 calories and 15 grams of sugar per 8 oz., Body Armor is on par with a standard sports drink. Functionally, the drink tries to do a lot, with functional ingredients grouped (on the side of the label) into blends for protection, recovery, vitamins, and hydration. While we can’t comment on the performance of the blend, all of these ingredients make sense for what is ultimately a fitness drink. Finally, there is the packaging, which is a proprietary 16 oz. PET bottle that has been fully wrapped. Aside from having solid visual execution, the label feels very much like a fitness or sports drink – and a very credible one at that. Plus, the use of fruit images and colorful backdrop definitely helps whet the appetite. Overall, this is a very good tasting and looking product that straddles the line between sports, fitness, and coconut water beverages.Reviewed on: 6/20/2011

BevNET Review: One of two tea based varieties, Body Armor’s Orange Mango Black and Green Tea has a more complex flavor than some of the other varieties that make up the brand. That’s especially true when also considering the 10 percent coconut water that’s at the base as well as added yerba mate extract. Ultimately, the flavor of the drink is heavy on citrus flavor, but with a slight tropical skew from the coconut water. The tea is present, but more of a secondary note than a part of the drink’s body (it doesn’t really taste like a tea drink). The functional cocktail is loaded with ingredients, including amino acids, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, fiber, EGCG, catechins, and polyphenols. With all of these ingredients, the potential for broad appeal is definitely there, especially with the easy to read buckets that they use to explain the ingredients on the side of the bottle. We’d say the same for the packaging in general, which has a sporty and intelligent style to it that still manages to remain approachable to both male and female consumers. The label looks great: it has matte and glossy sections as well as clear areas, and well executed graphic design. It definitely does not look like a product that’s on its first run. BevNET Review: The Raspberry Blueberry Goji flavor of Body Armor is another nice tasting formulation, starting with its base of 10 percennt coconut water, which adds a subtle tropical note. The raspberry, blueberry, and goji flavors ultimately taste like a mixed berry flavor more than anything, but, regardless of the name they’ve chosen for the flavor, this sugar sweetened product is very pleasing to drink. Functionally, the product contains the same ingredients set as the other Body Armor products, including amino acids, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, fiber, EGCG, catechins, and polyphenols. The product, which is marketed as the “Super Drink”, certainly covers a lot of ground with its functional content, but the fact that it tastes good and is hydrating seems like enough to bring consumers back. Plus, the packaging is very eye catching, with a fully wrapped label that features clear, matte, and gloss panels all on the same label. Between that and the proprietary bottle, Body Armor has clearly spared no expense in making this product – and it shows. Overall, Body Armor’s Raspberry Blueberry Goji is a great tasting and great looking functional beverage.Reviewed on: 6/20/2011
