Mango

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 32 oz PET
BevNET Review: Made with 90 percent juice, Mango was the preferred flavor of the Bolthouse Farms’ Protein Plus drinks that we sampled. Why? First, there is the flavor of the drink. Starting with a juice heavy base, which includes mango, carrot, apple, orange, and banana juices and purees, the product has an extremely natural flavor to it with each of the fruits distinguishable in the mix. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, with a smooth consistency that’s on par with other juice smoothie products. Second, Bolthouse Farms is known for juice, so creating a protein drink on top of what this company is known for seems more logical and marketable than its chocolate flavored counterpart. Nutritionally, the product is loaded with 16 g of protein per serving (both whey and soy), vitamins (B, C, A) , and minerals. Reading the bottle, they’ve done a nice job of explaining what’s in the drink and its benefits, which is something that they have the space to do on the larger size 32 oz. bottle. Otherwise, the package is aesthetically pleasing, with a nicely designed layout of fruit images and text along with the Bolthouse logo. The result is something that visually fits with the Bolthouse Farms brand, but, since it looks so similar, it might be missed as just another smoothie product. Still, a very strong entry from Bolthouse. Reviewed on: 9/24/2010

Chocolate

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 32 oz PET
BevNET Review: Using a blend of 21 nutrients and featuring 16 g of protein per 8 oz. serving, Bolthouse Farms has done a really nice job of executing their all natural approach to the protein drink category. From a flavor perspective, this product’s viscous body has a fair amount of flavor to it, with the main flavor being chocolate. It’s not overly sweet, giving the product more of a cocoa flavor than something that drinks like chocolate milk. There are some other flavors that hit your tongue, but they are not really distinguishable as anything in particular. This leads us to believe that these flavors are the after effects of the protein and nutrient content that has been used to fortify the mix. If anything, we’d probably enjoy this product a bit more if it weren’t as thick in body. On the nutritional front, the product is loaded with vitamins, minerals, protein (16g per serving), and electrolytes. The protein is derived from both soy and whey protein, which, according to the manufacturer delivers increased performance. Packaging is a large 32 oz. bottle, which they’ve covered with loads of explanatory text about what is inside the bottle. Since it’s a larger format, they have more room to play with, so we think they’ve executed this well. Perhaps our only concern for the product is the use of the Bolthouse Farms brand and trade dress – it seems visually and conceptually at odds with the product’s performance-oriented theme and chocolate flavor (we’re not sure what a farm has to do with either of these). Overall, a strong all natural protein formulation, but the branding seems like it’s potentially off the mark a bit. Reviewed on: 9/24/2010

Perfectly Protein (Vanilla Chai Tea with Soy Protein)

Product Type:Tea: Alternative; Container: 15.2 fl oz (450 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: This is a sweet, tasty, slightly cinnamon-flavored Vanilla-Chai treat has too minimal an amount of protein to give it a “protein shake” designation – you’d probably do as well to drink some milk. But that doesn’t take much away from the flavor, which is excellent, sort of like a drink of melted ice cream. In that great Bolthouse packaging.Reviewed on: 8/12/2005

Vedge Tomato Carrot Celery Juice

Product Type:Juice: Fruit Juice; Container: 15.2 fl oz (450 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: This vegetable juice blend has so many satisfying vegetable ingredients that they ought to call it “salad replacement drink.” With only 67 calories per serving and 2 grams of fiber, it is easy to picture this selling well as a late morning or late afternoon snack. It’s low enough in sodium, also, to keep you from feeling like you’ve just hit the neighborhood salt lick. We’re not usually veggie juice fans, but the lack of nastiness of this product, as well as Bolthouse’s strong packaging proposition makes this an appealing choice that’s definitely worth a try.Reviewed on: 8/12/2005

Green Goodness

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 15.2 fl oz (450 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: Bolthouse Farms has gone out of its way to add great fruit juice taste to what would otherwise be the kind of ingredients you’d normally find at a health food store. Normally, a list including ingredients like Spirulina, Blue Green Algae, Odorless Garlic, Broccoli, Spinach and Barley Grass would have us pretty intimidated, but the use of strong apple, pineapple, mango and kiwi juice concentrates makes the stuff taste a lot like a juice blend, and doesn’t suffer from the chalky, heterogeneous texture that can be a problem for beverages with this many added nutrients. But then there’s the appearance: when Bolthouse Farms says green, they mean GREEN. It’s like something out of Swamp Thing. We suggest using an opaque glass for this stuff, but for folks who really believe in drinking their nutrients, this is a very flavorful way to do it.Reviewed on: 8/12/2005

Passion Fruit Apple Carrot Juice

Product Type:Juice: Fruit Juice; Container: 15.2 fl oz (450 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: In this surprisingly tasty blend, Bolthouse Farms once again finds the ability to allow distinct, wholesome flavors to intermingle in a smooth and complementary way. The passion fruit provides an exotic lead-in to sweet apple; the only problem is that the carrot lends it too much of an earthy, vegetal undertone that, while not totally unpleasant, lingers a bit too much. Still, it’s an interesting taste that we could probably get used to. This is also one of Bolthouse Farms’ most attractive packages, as the bright orange color of the drink, while not completely visible through the shrink-wrap label, nevertheless deepens the look of the bottle. Mango Lemonade

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 15.2 fl oz (450 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: This is a tasty mix, with the distinct mango and lemon flavors combining to curtail any lemonade’s resident sourness. While a tiny bit too tangy at the end for our tastes, the sweet and tart mix is nevertheless a creative twist on traditional lemonade. Bolthouse has also done a good job with the shrink-wrapped plastic label on this one – while one of our criticisms of the brand has been that the bottles seemed to have something to hide behind the label, lo and behold, as we started to drink it, the top part turned transparent, meaning that what we’d thought was the rich color of the plastic was actually the rich color of the drink. To make a long story short, it looks really good, although the label was slightly misapplied and off-center. Definitely worth a try for lemonade fans.Reviewed on: 8/12/2005
