Update Information for This Brand

Manufacturer's Brand Overview: [Edit]
The Boylan Bttlg. Co., founded in 1891, is honored to share very similar beginnings with the carbonated beverages of the same era that are now world-famous. But it is our differences of today of which we are most proud. For more than a century Boylan has formulated and produced, regardless of cost, only “authentic soda-pop”, unlike most bottlers in the country who have over the years compromised their original recipes and cut costs by switching to corn syrup and plastic bottles. Boylan still uses pure cane sugar which enhances the true flavor rather than leave a syrupy aftertaste and thick glass bottles to ensure freshness and proper levels of carbonation. Our in-house flavor formulations use the most expensive extracts and essences – and plenty of them. So whether you’re drinking a Boylan because you appreciate what is good and made right or just trying one for the first time, we thank you for supporting one of the oldest bottling companies and its authentic beverages of a bygone era.

Cane Cola

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz glass
BevNET Review: This flavor of the Boylan’s Natural line is sweet, sweet, herbal, and sweet. Not that it’s totally unpleasant: they’re clearly throwing their weight behind the idea that cola is a specific flavor, rather than the analog for soda that it has become. Unfortunately, the result is slightly medicinal in taste and color – which might very well be a selling point for some. The question is, will they be able to convince everyone that their purists’ result is what cola should be, rather than what they’ve been exposed to thus far.

Black Cherry

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz glass
BevNET Review: This is good stuff. It’s sweet as heck, but filled with fruity black cherry flavor. While not quite as assertive or spicy as a Dr. Brown’s, the unsurpassed king of the black cherry scene – probably because of its minimal carbonation -- it’s still a tasty complement to food. But despite its real cane sugar and bourbon vanilla sweeteners, this soda is not so syrupy that it couldn’t be swigged by itself. Boylan’s comes in a clear glass bottle that could have come straight out of the Jetsons’ refrigerator, with a raised glass trademark evocative of a Chateauneuf du Pape bottle and a donut-shaped bump right underneath the twist-top. The result is a bottle that feels as good in your hand as its contents do in your belly.

Creme Vanilla

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz glass
BevNET Review: Given how much we enjoyed the black cherry, we’re surprised at the lack of consistency in the flavor of the Crème Vanilla. Although it’s made with cane sugar and bourbon vanilla, chocolate and coffee extracts, the sweetness still tastes a bit artificial, and the consistency seems a little, well, watery rather than creamy. It still comes in that great Boylan’s bubble-top bottle, and should benefit from the visual and tactile appeal of the brand, but overall it’s a dip in the high road they’re taking.

Root Beer

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz glass
BevNET Review: As befits the name, there’s nothing artificial-tasting at all about this Root Beer, which carries with it plenty of birch and sassafras flavor. It’s got terrific mouth-feel, isn’t syrupy at all due to the cane sugar used to sweeten it, has a creamy finish, but doesn’t pour with a head at all and could probably use a bit more carbonation. Nevertheless, as a mild, non-spicy root beer, it stands with the best of them and is served well by the retro-style Boylan’s Natural bottle. The question is whether it will be able to distinguish itself in what is an already-crowded craft root beer field.
