Root Beer

BevNET Review: As befits the name, there’s nothing artificial-tasting at all about this Root Beer, which carries with it plenty of birch and sassafras flavor. It’s got terrific mouth-feel, isn’t syrupy at all due to the cane sugar used to sweeten it, has a creamy finish, but doesn’t pour with a head at all and could probably use a bit more carbonation. Nevertheless, as a mild, non-spicy root beer, it stands with the best of them and is served well by the retro-style Boylan’s Natural bottle. The question is whether it will be able to distinguish itself in what is an already-crowded craft root beer field.

I found the flavour to be reasonably acceptable, but far too weak. If you want a very, very mild root beer it may be a good choice, but I found it mild to the point of lacking any really distinctive character. Also, I noticed a bit of the medicinal undertone noted in the review of the Cane Cola. I tend to like my beverages to have a little more personality, so this one didn't really work out for me.

I actually really enjoyed this root beer. It's sweet (sweet is good!) without being syrupy--no doubt due to its inclusion of cane sugar rather than corn syrup--and it's one of the few root beers to include sassafras as one of its flavorings. It's not, however, as creamy as I like, and it failed the all-important "float test," indicating that the flavor just wasn't intense enough for my personal taste (these two failings are responsible for a half-star demerit). The color is unique and lovely--reminiscent of a tawny ale--and the bottle with its color-applied label is nice; would that it contained a full 12 ounces rather than 11.5. I definitely recommend giving this one a try and would suggest that Boylan's tweak the flavorings' intensity dial.
