BevNET Review: For coconut water brands that use cans as their package of choice, a flavor with pulp is typically part of the lineup. C2O, however, didn't have this type of product, which is perhaps at least part of the reason why they’ve expanded in this direction rather than adding flavored offerings like some of the Tetra Pak carton based brands. Opening the can, we were admittedly thinking “if you’ve had one coconut water with pulp, you’ve had them all,” but once we started sipping this product it was clear that they did something slightly different. Specifically, the product has a more heavy volume of pulp, which also comes in different sizes and textures. The pieces range from larger soft bits to more crunch pieces that add some grit to the body. Whether or not this is a good thing will ultimately be a matter of personal preference, but we do like that they’ve differentiated their product in this manner. Visually, the tall white can has a healthy and earthy vibe to it, which we definitely favor over those competitors whose packaging looks either ethnic or just rehashes the blue tropical beach image. They’ve done a nice job with the front panel, allowing for some spacing around the logo, but also managing to fit text on the lower portion of the tall container. If there’s any concern with what they’ve done it’s whether or not the differences between this product and their original pulp free formulation are too subtle. BevNET Review: C2O’s Pure Coconut Water might not be as sexy as competing products packed in Tetra Pak containers or PET bottles, but what’s inside this 17.5 ounce can is certainly able to hold its own. Using a single ingredient, pure coconut water (not from concentrate), the product has that “good for you” flavor that coconut water has become known for. In the case of C2O, they’ve sourced coconut water (from Thailand) that has the right balance of sweet and salty flavors, which is something that we can’t say for some of the other entries in this growing category. As a result, this product is extremely drinkable, to the point of almost being chuggable. It has slightly higher carbohydrate and caloric levels than what some of its competition, but it also has more sodium and less potassium . Regardless of a straight numeric comparison, we found C2O to be quite hydrating and pleasing to the palate. Packaging is the brand’s biggest point of differentiation, with a 17.5 ounce painted steel can. Visually speaking, we like the C2O brand and design. However, the ribs of the steel can’s midsection give the product a somewhat sloppy first impression. However, we think that they are wise to point out that this container is widely recyclable (whereas Tetra Pak is not). Still, branching out into secondary packaging formats would most certainly improve this brand’s market potential. Overall, a very enjoyable product.Reviewed on: 10/4/2010
