Carpe Diem

Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

Carpe Diem is both - philosophy and brand. Carpe Diem is a philosophy: an appeal to the people of our time – to live consciously and seize the day because today is the first day of the rest of your life. Carpe Diem unites all those who value conscious enjoyment with all their senses. Those who demand authenticity and functionality just as much as modernity and style. As a brand, Carpe Diem stands for drinking with a purpose – for innovative functional drinks that equally combine drinking pleasure with effectiveness. The beverages of Carpe Diem are based on traditional methods of preparation and knowledge that is thousands of years old. Carpe Diem has made it its goal to offer this ancient knowledge to the consumer in form of modern drinks. Carpe Diem – drinking with a purpose.

Kombucha Classic

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 16.9 oz PET
BevNET Review: If you’ve wanted to like kombucha, but just can’t tolerate the flavor, then Carpe Diem’s Classic Kombucha is worth a try. It features a pleasant sugar sweetened formulation that has just a touch of fermented tea flavor to it. It doesn’t have that bitter finish found in non shelf stable competitors, which gives the product a smooth taste from start to finish. Sugar (13g per serving) provides the drink’s subtle sweetness. Herbal tea, and a touch of acerola juice help round things out and help further cut the fermented flavor. Packaging is a proprietary 16.9 ounce PET bottle, which has a label around its mid section. The design of the label is clean, but conceptual, especially with the center graphic not really adding anything to the marketability of the product. Further on that, is the word “classic”, which doesn’t seem like the most descriptive word for a flavor that’s relatively new the market. Overall, this is a very enjoyable product that’s one of the more mainstream kombucha efforts out there.Reviewed on: 4/23/2010

Kombucha Cranberry

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 16.9 oz PET
BevNET Review: Of the Carpe Diem Kombucha line, the Cranberry variety has the most tart and sweet flavor. This has to do with the fact that they’ve added 5% cranberry juice, which adds a nice counterbalance to the fermented flavor of the drink’s kombucha base. The lightly carbonated kombucha used in this product is more mellow than some of its refrigerator case competitors. Those products use live cultures that grow stronger on the shelf. More importantly, we think that the addition of cranberry gives the uninitiated consumer something that’s familiar and appealing. As a result, we believe that this is likely the most marketable flavor of the trio. On the packaging front, they’ve created a clean looking 16.9 ounce PET bottle that has a sophisticated vibe to it. The graphics, which feature small cranberries surrounding an illustration of a man with a bow and arrow, have a subtle approach to them rather than one that’s in your face with massive fruit images or tea leaves. That seems to fit with what the brand is all about, although it’s difficult to say what type of consumer will see this product and select it from a cooler. Nit picking aside, we still think that this is the best flavor of Carpe Diem's Kombucha lineup.Reviewed on: 4/23/2010

Kombucha Quince

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 16.9 oz PET
BevNET Review: The Quince variety of Carpe Diem’s Kombucha line is a very pleasant tasting product. Aside from having quince juice extract, they’ve added apple, lemon, and acerola juices, as well as herbal and white tea extracts. The result is a product that’s lighter in the mouth than the other two Carpe Diem Kombuchas and has an almost floral note to it. This also lightens the fermented flavor to the point where you really only notice it on the finish. All in all, it’s a very pleasant product to drink – and one that would make a great adult alternative to traditional carbonated soft drinks. In terms of packaging and branding, this product presents itself in a way that’s clean and polished. This starts with the product’s proprietary 16.9 ounce bottle, which has a well organized and visually appealing label design. However, promoting it as a “Quince” flavor doesn’t seem like the most marketable approach. Something more conceptual might be a nice alternative. Overall, a very well done product.Reviewed on: 4/23/2010

Botanic Water - Vitalizing

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) PET
BevNET Review: Carpe Diem's Vitalizing Botanic Water is a refreshing blend of lightly sparkling water, pear, and herbal flavors. There lightly sweetened formulation delivers subtle refreshment with notes of elderflower, pear, and lemongrass. Other ingredients include cardamom, ginger, quince, rose hip and birch leaves. Overall, the flavors work together harmoniously to create a smooth taste that's very enjoyable. Packaging is just like the other Carpe Diem varieties, with an attractive earthy look to the product. Good stuff.Reviewed on: 11/2/2007

Botanic Water - Harmonizing

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) PET
BevNET Review: Carpe Diem delivers another superb flavor with their Harmonizing Botanic Water entry. Using a lightly carbonated base, the product features very subtle berry and herb flavors, which work very well together. It's a nicely balanced flavor that falls right in the middle of being a replacement for either a flavored water or CSD. Our only suggestion is to make the flavor more obvious -- because right now you really have to look closely to know what you are getting into.Reviewed on: 11/2/2007

Botanic Water - Relaxing

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) PET
BevNET Review: The "Relaxing" variety of Carpe Diem's Botanic Water is actually quite good. Using a lightly carbonated formulation of mild herbal and fruit extracts, the product has a light body that has an earthy finish. There's a mild amount of sweetness which, according to the label, comes from the fruit that is used in the product. We're not quite sure that we'd consider this "water", but whatever it is it's quite good. The packaging is a proprietary style and is attractive, but the white label doesn't really pop out at you. Still, it's a good product that makes a great alternative for the diet-averse CSD drinker. Reviewed on: 4/12/2006

Ginkgo

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) PET
BevNET Review: The search for the marketable herbal supplement has led the founder of Red Bull to launch this elegantly packaged, lightly-carbonated all-natural product. It looks like an imported Ale and drinks like a smooth root soda, albeit with many more herbal flavors and a too-strong floral scent. We think there’s a lot of potential in this product but it's definitely not ready for mainstream USA. Also, at 180 calories per bottle, we’re not sure that the intended audience – who is obviously a label reader – is going to bite, especially with so many herbally-enhanced teas and waters on the market. Still, the long, smooth, high-shouldered PET bottle cuts a fine figure and the label has top-notch art that looks like it could slide onto the racks of any natural-foods store. Whether, and where, it fits into the ordinary cooler is another store. At a minimum, we think that this product can definitely be a player at the super premium level.Reviewed on: 4/12/2006

Kefir

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) PET
BevNET Review: While we wouldn’t recommend opening up this dark purple beverage while you’re wearing your summer whites, we were pretty pleasantly surprised by the lack of sweetness in this lightly carbonated elderberry/kefir mix. While there’s a pretty pungent smell coming off this stuff, the flavor is in balance and it makes for a refreshing, almost Campari-like blend. We like the packaging with its elegant, willowy bottle, although the deep color of this drink might discourage consumers from making a curiosity buy. However, consumers looking for a good, herbal CSD replacement will definitely not be disappointed by the bottle and technical quality of this product.Reviewed on: 4/12/2006

Kombucha

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 16.9 fl oz (500 ml) PET
BevNET Review: Easily the best of the Carpe Diem beverage line, this scarlet drink has a pleasant, easily noticeable mandarin orange flavor that plays nicely against the natural pungency of the fermented kombucha. This pungency gives it a sour smell and taste that is just barely leavened by the fructose sweetener. But somehow – except for the smell, which is just not pleasant – it works, and we wouldn’t mind drinking this out of a glass, over ice, where that aroma would be less concentrated than in PET plastic bottle’s small opening. Still, the packaging and label are elegant, which is the direct result of the time and money that was clearly spent on the proprietary bottle. We like the taste -- even though it has niche appeal -- and we think it looks good enough for a consumer to pick it up. However, we’re worried that a lot of consumers will be turned off by the aroma. Still, that's not something that will hold against Carpe Diem as this is a very well executed kombucha drink.Reviewed on: 4/12/2006
