Caveman Foods

Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

For millennia, indigenous peoples from around the world have sustained themselves on fermented foods. Our organic, natural soda (water kefir) is carefully fermented to produce a bubbly beverage that's abundant with probiotic cultures. This natural fizz provides crisp flavor and sustaining hydration. One sip and you will feel the difference!

Vanilla

Product Type:Other; Container: 10 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Caveman Foods “Vanilla” flavor is a fermented kefir drink that is positioned as an organic probiotic beverage. It has a fair amount of fizz to it, which definitely helps to offset the underlying fermented flavor. Otherwise, the lightly sweet drink has notes of raisin and vanilla, which combine into a flavor that is reminiscent of bread. For an adult palate, this product could definitely work, especially with it having only 40 calories per 10 ounces (and no diet sweeteners to get there). Visually, the product definitely has some room for improvement, with the Caveman Foods brand name feeling completely irrelevant to the graphic design that they’ve used. And from a technical perspective, we’re not fans of the way that they’ve arranged things or how they’ve put the visual emphasis on the “bubble” images. Overall, what’s inside the bottle could certainly stand up against kombuchas and other fermented drinks, but the outside needs a makeover.Reviewed on: 4/17/2012

Black Pepper

Product Type:Other; Container: 10 oz Glass
BevNET Review: While Black Pepper is far from a flavor that will lure drinkers in to any beverage, it’s a flavor that works surprisingly well as a flavoring for Caveman Foods’ USDA organic kefir. Plus, it’s a pretty original approach to flavoring a functional beverage (we’re used to superfruit flavorings...). The product isn’t spicy, but the distinct flavor of black pepper is easily distinguishable from the mix. It seems to add a nice contrast to the fermented base of the drink, while also helping to temper the sweetness of the product. To that end, the product has a very sophisticated and complex feel -- and having 40 calories per bottle isn’t so bad either. Their choice of packaging is a 10 oz. glass bottle, which gives it the look of a carbonated beverage (which is as a result of the fermentation). While we like the clear label, the execution of the design could be improved upon, with the right side of the front panel feeling like a rush job that doesn’t go with the distressed look of the Caveman logo. Otherwise, the product has a minimalist appearance, which is definitely a fit for what’s inside the bottle. Overall, an innovative and enjoyable product.Reviewed on: 11/7/2011

Saffron

Product Type:Other; Container: 10 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Caveman Food’s Organic Probiotic Water Kefir is a fermented sparkling drink that delivers light flavor and probiotic benefits. In this case, they’ve flavored the product with saffron (yes, saffron is actually an ingredient), which leads to a mellow, but unidentifiable, herb like flavor. It does a nice job of complementing the vinegar like taste of the fermentation. The drink has a splash of sweetness to it, which further helps to cut the fermented flavor. Ultimately, the product drinks like an adult-oriented CSD. All things considered, this is a very drinkable product -- and probably the most drinkable product out there when it comes to kefir drinks. On the packaging front, we like their choice of a 10 oz. glass bottle and a clear label. The name, “Caveman Foods”, works in the sense that “Caveman” implies that this is a product that has been around for ages (a true statement for kefir). However, the word “Foods” makes us wonder if this is part of a larger food company? (This doesn’t appear to be the case) In any event, making it feel more like a beverage than part of something bigger would help the product. Finally, the visual design could use some improvement in the sense that the logo feels disconnected from the rest of the front panel. Overall, a really good option as far as kefir drinks go.Reviewed on: 11/7/2011
