Mango-J

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 12oz Plastic Bottle
BevNET Review: Chia\Vie’s Mango-J is named for the combination of mango and orange juice, which is a pretty accurate way of describing the primary flavor of this product. It’s made with water, orange juice concentrate, mango puree, apple juice concentrate, ground chia seeds, banana puree, natural flavors, and gellan gum. All of this combines to make something that tastes like a ready to drink smoothie (which is how they label it), with the apple and banana flavors coming in right behind that of the orange and mango. However, the most unique part of this product’s formulation is the ground chia, which adds some grit to the body and an earthy undertone to the flavor. In our opinion, this isn’t as big of a leap as drinking a product with whole chia seeds, although it’s hard to say how consumers will respond in the long run. Regardless, it’s a very familiar and enjoyable tasting product. Packaging, which was previously a 10 oz. aluminum bottle, is now a 12 oz. PET bottle. This seems much more practical for Chia\Vie to produce, while the extra 2 ounces is a nice bonus for anyone who was previously consuming it. And the design of the bottle is attractive and clean, with a good for you vibe. Overall, a very enjoyable and nicely executed product. Reviewed on: 9/7/2012

Banapple-Berry

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 12oz Plastic Bottle
BevNET Review: Using a blend of banana, apple, blackberry and blueberry purees/juices, the Banapple-Berry flavor of Chia\Vie is very mainstream and enjoyable. The added ground chia seed adds some grit to the flavor, but it doesn’t seems like something that would take much getting used to. Plus, it helps to temper the sweetness of the drink, which isn’t a bad thing in our book. Nutritionally, this product has lots of benefits from the use of ground chia and fruit juice, including vitamins, fiber, protein, potassium, and omega 3, 6, and 9. On the outside, the new fully wrapped 12 oz. PET bottle (it used to be in a 10 oz. aluminum bottle) has a sleek and polished look. However, we’re not really sure that the slash in the name Chia\Vie is really needed or helpful (it doesn’t really add anything to the brand, so it’s potentially a distraction). It might also be worth more prominently calling out the fact that the drink has no added sugar. Otherwise, the overall look of the design that they’ve created seems like a good fit and it’s been executed nicely. Overall, a very solid product that offers some nice differentiation (ground chia) to the burgeoning chia category of beverages.Reviewed on: 9/7/2012

Acerola-Pina

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 12oz Plastic Bottle
BevNET Review: Chia\Vie’s Acerola-Pina is a blend of apple juice, pineapple juice, ground chia seeds, and acerola juice (along with natural flavors, gellan gum, and beta carotene). The flavor is straightforward, with each of the fruit flavors being easy to distinguish from the mix. On the other hand, the addition of the ground chia adds some grit to the body of the drink, which, aside from the added nutritional benefits of chia (fiber, protein, omegas), gives the product a slightly exotic feeling as compared to your standard smoothie drink. Ultimately, we think that the flavor of what’s inside the bottle is reason enough to drink the product. Packaging has evolved from the 10 oz. aluminum bottle used in Chia\Vie’s initial product to a 12 oz. PET bottle that has been fully wrapped. While the graphics have a slightly whimsical look, the overall look of the bottle is clean and very professional looking. The front panel, which relies primarily on text, has a relatively simple layout and is easy to read. Figuring out what this product is shouldn’t be too terribly hard, with familiar fruits and the word “smoothie” helping consumers make sense of what they are buying. Overall, another nice flavor from Chia\Vie.Reviewed on: 9/7/2012

Superfruit

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 10 oz Can
BevNET Review: Chia Vie is made with a blend of water, banana puree, apple juice, blueberry puree, and blackberry puree, which have been enhanced with chia seed powder and natural flavor. The flavor that results tastes very much like a fruit smoothie, with banana and berry flavor being the dominant flavors in the mix. The chia adds grit to the body, but doesn’t appear to add any noticeable flavor to the mix. That being said, Chia Vie tastes like your typical fruit smoothie, so it should be palatable to a pretty wide audience. On the other hand, it’s not a drink that, on flavor alone, we could imagine consumers going out of their way for. The nutritional benefits of chia, which include fiber (5g per bottle), vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids (as well as other benefits), are the main selling point of this product and a place where Chia Vie excels compared to traditional smoothie products. Packaging is a 10 oz. aluminum bottle, which has been painted with a whimsical looking design. While the design itself has a polished feeling to it, the color palate looks somewhat drab and easy to miss. Overall, we like the flavor and the nutritional content provided by the added chia seed, but the packaging could be improved so that the product pops off the shelf more. Reviewed on: 4/4/2011
