Black Currant Blueberry Nectar

Product Type:Juice: Fruit Juice; Container: 16 fl oz
BevNET Review: For a drink that brags about the antioxidant superiority of black currants over blueberries, it seems quite interesting that they have a blueberry flavor to the lineup. On the other hand, this is the best tasting flavor of the line. The sweetness of the added blueberry juice does a nice job of countering the tartness of the black currants. The result is something that's flavorful, but not too strong, with pleasant fruit flavor throughout. Still we have issues with the product's calorie count (300 per bottle) and carbohydrates (76g), and the product's meager nutritional panel (since antioxidants aren't quantified) relies mainly on added vitamin C. Lastly, we're simply not sure why something that's as niche as black currant juice needs a lineup of six flavors. In our opinion, this one's a keeper -- but we're not so sure about many of the others.Reviewed on: 2/4/2009

Black Currant Nectar

Product Type:Juice: Fruit Juice; Container: 16 fl oz
BevNET Review: The flagship flavor of the lineup is still a good one, with a strong black currant flavor that's tart and sweet. It's loosely reminiscent of grape juice, which could be good or bad depending on how you look at this product. Added agave syrup aids the sweetness while added ascorbic acid helps with the product's level of vitamin C. Really though, this product's calories and sugar content are an issue for us, especially when the main selling point is its antioxidant capacity. Packaging is the cleanest of the lineup, relying on only images of black currants to sell the drink. On the other hand, the lack of a secondary flavor might present a problem for consumers who aren't familiar with the flavor of black currants. Overall, a good product, but the high calorie count and niche flavor are going to be an issue.Reviewed on: 2/4/2009

Black Currant Strawberry Kiwi Nectar

Product Type:Juice: Fruit Juice; Container: 16 fl oz
BevNET Review: There's a lot of flavor in this 66% juice based drink, starting with the very tart flavor of black currant juice. Following on that, are strawberry, kiwi, and elderberry, which add some sweet and additional tartness to the mix. It's a very natural taste, delivering straight up fruit flavor that's very true to nature. The body is somewhat thick, although certainly not at a smoothie level, and that, combined with the tartness, require this drink to be consumed slowly. Our biggest beef with the product is the calorie (320 per bottle) and carbohydrate (82g per bottle) count, which seems at odds with the drink's attempts to cast itself as a healthy antioxidant laden product. Otherwise, trace amounts of natural vitamins and added vitamin C (360% per bottle) offer some nutrition. Packaging is good, technically speaking, making use of vibrant black currant graphics to help pull the consumer in. However, whereas images of other well marketed fruits (like the pomegranate) help create buyers, the lack of marketing behind the black currant might confuse or otherwise turn off potential drinkers. That, above all, is the biggest challenge for this product.Reviewed on: 2/4/2009

CurrantC

Product Type:Juice: Fruit Juice; Container: 16 fl oz (473 ml) glass
BevNET Review: As you can probably guess, Currant C is made with black currant juice, which is touted for its antioxidants (twice that of blueberries). The dark, sweet fluid is so intense that it even stains the inside of the glass bottle. The flavor is something that is like a cross between blueberries and grapes, giving the product a tart but sweet body with a sweet finish. It's potent, but easy to drink, and we appreciate the product's fresh taste. Labeling has been improved over the initial version that we sampled, with a more clear cut message packed into a relatively attractive looking package. It could certainly be punched up to compete with some of the super premium players, but the fluid inside the bottle is just as enjoyable as anything else on the market today. Definitely worth a try if you appreciate natural tasting juice that's high in antioxidants.Reviewed on: 5/13/2008
