BevNET Review: Remington Scott’s Federal Coffee is positioned as a high-caffeine player in the ready-to-drink coffee space. Currently available only in a mocha flavor, the product has a very straightforward flavor that’s on par with other products in the space. It’s milky and sweet, with a base of brewed coffee that is smooth and flavorful. The mocha flavor is a pleasant touch, but isn’t so strong that it overwhelms the other flavors. All in all, they’ve done a very nice job of creating a formulation that’s smooth from start to finish. Visually, the 13.7 oz. glass bottle is a fine choice of packaging, especially since it looks substantially larger than the competition’s squat-looking bottles. The product’s branding is simple and clean, but, despite being named after a person, lacks in the personality department (who is Remington Scott?). As it stands right now, we think it would be easy to mistake this for a store brand. Plus, we take issue with the large “WARNING” (with “caffeine content exceeds normal amounts for daily consumption” beneath) on the front of the bottle to call out the product’s supposedly increased caffeine level. Neither the label nor the company’s web site tells you exactly how many milligrams are in this product. Instead, there’s a somewhat vague bar chart on the back, which, again, does not list milligrams in comparing Federal Coffee to the competition. It seems very irresponsible to place a warning of this kind on the product without this information or some guidance as to how much of this product should be consumed in a day. Overall, high caffeine coffee is a straightforward concept that has been tried before and Federal Coffee’s execution of it is a good one, despite its labeling flaws. Reviewed on: 8/21/2012
