Review: Ginger Cider
(Last Updated: Oct 07, 2014 at 10:25 AM)
Foodies’ Ginger Cider is a cold-pressed and high pressure processed (HPP) blend of apple, water, ginger and lime that is comprised of 70 percent juice. The flavor is first and foremost that of an apple cider. While the labels note that the beverage is unsweetened (meaning no sweetener added), it’s definitely sweet. The ginger gives it a subtle spice, although the drink is definitely not spicy. Finally, there’s the lime, which adds a note of acidity and helps round everything out. As for the combination of the three flavors, we think they are on the right track. However, we wish the product had a bolder ginger flavor. This would help further set it apart from simply being a flavored bottle of apple juice. On the outside, the product has a clean and nicely arranged appearance. It’s easy to quickly figure out what the product is from a flavor perspective. We do, however, feel as though the company should make the consumer aware of the fact that this is an HPP product. Furthermore, we think that they need to further develop the branding. “Foodies” feels very muted and almost an afterthought on the label. Making it stand out more -- and perhaps using the full name of the company (Five Star Foodies) -- would be something to consider. Overall, as far as conventional HPP beverages go, this is a good one, but we’d like to see the product evolve a bit more.
