Mango Limon

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz can
BevNET Review: Golazo’s Mango-Limon flavored energy drink is, as the name states, a mango and lime flavored energy drink. The product has been formulated to be 90 calories per can, which they’ve achieved through the use of stevia. From our perspective, we’re not sold on using an expensive ingredient like stevia unless you are going for zero calories (or close to that). Fortunately, the stevia is mostly hidden, with the a slight aftertaste the only place that it’s really noticeable. In terms of energy ingredients, this product blends 100mg of caffeine (from caffeine, guarana, and yerba mate), electrolytes, and D-ribose. Packaging utilizes Golazo’s soccer themed brand, which feels authentic and inspired, but not yet a mainstream alternative to the big brands. If there’s anything about the design that we’re not overly fond of, it’s the seemingly random person pointing up at the logo. Overall, this is a good effort from Golazo. Reviewed on: 3/29/2012

Jamaica

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz can
BevNET Review: While we understand that calling the drink Jamaica (as in “huh-mike-uh”, the hibiscus drink) fits with the soccer theme, this product is really what one would describe as fruit punch with a bite to it. Yes, it has “Hibiscus Punch” as a secondary flavor name, simply calling it “Fruit Punch” would eliminate what we feel is a potentially limiting name. Taste wise, it is actually a pretty nice interpretation of a classic fruit punch flavor, with a light spice to the finish. Despite it being an ingredient, we do not taste any hibiscus in the drink. It is likely washed away by the stevia or the other, more potent flavors in the drink. To us, that’s not a bad thing -- hibiscus should probably be eliminated from the formulation as we can’t imagine that this flavor will help sell the drink. Overall, this is a decent tasting drink and it packs an energy punch, but we think that simplifying both the name and formula would help this product sell.Reviewed on: 3/29/2012

Mandarina

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz can
BevNET Review: Golazo’s “Mandarina” flavor is a relatively pleasant tasting orange flavored energy drink. They’ve decided to use stevia (along with sugar) to keep the calories under 100 per can (it has 90). Compared with their other flavors, the stevia is definitely more noticeable in this variety as it typically is with most orange flavored drinks that use it. Despite the stevia note and aftertaste, Golazo Mandarina is still a pleasing product to drink. Functionally, each 12 oz. can has 100mg of caffeine, electrolytes, and D-ribose. This should make the performance of the drink within the realm of other energy drinks. The can uses a soccer themed design, which gives the drink a sports orientation that is a nice change from competing drinks that typically go for aggressive or chic imagery. However, there are things on the can that could be eliminated and more emphasis could be placed on the Golazo logo. Finally, the name “Mandarina” (for mandarin orange) is something that an American consumer will likely associate as an Asian flavor, despite its popularity in South America. Overall, this is a good start that, with some refinement, definitely has potential to be a good part of the Golazo brand.Reviewed on: 3/29/2012

Sugar Free

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Diet; Container: 12 oz can
BevNET Review: Like most sugar free energy drinks out there, the biggest issue with this flavor is the presence of the sweeteners used in the drink (stevia and erythritol). In the case of this product, these sweeteners quickly wipe out the mango and lime flavors that we believe were used in this product. Ultimately, your mouth ends up with a strong sweetener aftertaste, which is definitely less-than-pleasant. If they could figure out a way to dial up the fruit flavors or otherwise reduce this sweetener flavor, we’d be much more fond of this product. Functionally, the drink has the same ingredients as the other flavors, which means that it has 100mg of caffeine (per can), D-ribose, and electrolytes. The packaging goes for unpainted silver sections rather than an accent color. With all of the flavors using a white background (which is typically used to signify a diet product), this product’s used of silver stands out and makes it the most intuitive of the bunch. Also, the use of the person on the bottom of the front panel actually makes sense, with it helping to call attention to the fact that this is a sugar free formulation.Reviewed on: 3/29/2012

Sports Energy

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz Can
BevNET Review: Designed as a sports energy drink, Golazo Energy blends energy and hydration components into a single serve 12 oz. format. The flavor of the drink is something that we'd describe as pear-apple-citrus and, thanks to a sugar and stevia sweetener blend, the product has a relatively natural level of sweetness and only a slight sweetener aftertaste. Functionally, the product blends electrolytes, D-Ribose, yerba mate, taurine, caffeine (100mg) and gaurana seed extract. While we didn't feel fully hydrated from consuming this product, the energy boost is unquestionable. From a branding and positioning point of view, this product is all about sports — and soccer more specifically ("Golazo" is a a phrase that's used to describe a great goal). The look of the product is clean and easy to understand, with both a soccer ball and a crest that looks very much like something that belongs on a soccer uniform. This seems like a reasonable way to market a drink — after all, we've seen energy drinks that have targeted sports and activities that have much smaller fan bases. Plus, we have to guess that there's some ethnic potential for this drink, both because of the name and the large soccer fan base that exists in some demographics. Overall, we like this product quite a bit. Reviewed on: 11/15/2010
